About

In September last year, Gita Gopinath, First Deputy Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), attempted to push ‘for a strategic pivot in global fiscal policy’ to ensure governments have the resources to invest in structural transformations, including climate change, and tackle geopolitical uncertainties and recurrence of pandemic-like situations. In a public lecture in Dublin, Ireland, Gopinath warned of burgeoning public debt at 93% of global GDP in 2023, projected to reach 100% by the end of the decade. Stating that the true level of fiscal risk in several advanced economies was worse than one can imagine, Gopinath asked countries to adopt fiscal policies that focus on growth, guardrails, and grassroots. Gopinath represents IMF at multilateral forums and maintains contacts with the Fund’s 191 member countries, besides leading the Fund’s work on surveillance and related policies, and overseeing research and flagship publications. Born in India and currently a U.S. national, she has been a recipient of the government’s Pravasi Bharatiya Samman.
