About

For Sangita Jindal, chairperson, JSW Foundation, art and heritage are not passive pursuits. At the heart of her current work is the restoration of Shalimar Bagh in Srinagar. With Phase I now complete, the project has delivered conservation of over 300 hand-painted Nakashi papier-mâché ceiling panels across the Black and Pink Pavilions and the structural revival of the Rani Mahal, the Pink Pavilion, and the Twin Pavilions. Her focus now shifts to the final phase, covering the Black Pavilion, the Entrance Pavilion, and the Nur Mahal. The Foundation is spearheading The Mumbai Textile Mills Cultural Heritage Project—an effort to reimagine a historic industrial district into a cultural destination. “It will be be one of the most landmark projects undertaken by us, with national and global significance,” says Jindal. The Foundation is also building the JSW Cultural Museum in Guwahati “dedicated to celebrating and preserving the art, heritage, and living traditions of Assam and the north-east,” she adds. The museum will house the rare Vrindavani Vastra on loan from the British Museum. Equally central is Jindal’s focus on women’s empowerment. “I have always believed that when women are empowered, entire communities transform,” she says, pointing to initiatives like JSW Sakhi and JSW Shakti.
