Shares of Chinese memory chipmaker ChangXin Memory Technologies (CXMT) surged more than 500% on their Shanghai Stock Exchange debut on Monday, capping Asia’s biggest initial public offering (IPO) of 2026 and briefly making the company China’s most valuable listed firm by market capitalisation.

The company had raised 57.9 billion yuan (about $8.6 billion) through its IPO, making it the largest mainland Chinese semiconductor listing on record, surpassing Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corp.’s (SMIC) 2020 offering.

The stock, which was priced at 8.66 yuan per share, opened at 49.50 yuan before extending gains during the trading session. At its peak, CXMT’s market value crossed 3.3 trillion yuan (around $487 billion), overtaking some of China’s biggest listed companies.

The strong debut comes as investors continue to pour money into companies linked to artificial intelligence infrastructure. CXMT is China’s largest maker of DRAM (dynamic random-access memory) chips, which are widely used in AI servers, personal computers, smartphones, and data centres.

The listing is also being seen as another milestone in Beijing’s push to build a self-reliant semiconductor industry as the country navigates U.S.-led export restrictions on advanced chip technologies. Over the past few years, CXMT has grown into the world’s fourth-largest DRAM manufacturer, accounting for about 7.7% of the global market.

The company plans to use the IPO proceeds to expand manufacturing capacity and upgrade its production technology as demand for memory chips continues to rise. Analysts have said AI applications are driving a sharp increase in memory requirements, making DRAM and high-bandwidth memory an increasingly important part of the AI supply chain.

CXMT’s financial performance has also improved sharply ahead of the listing. Reuters reported that the company posted nearly 700% year-on-year revenue growth in the first quarter while swinging from a loss to a profit, helping strengthen investor interest in the offering.

The size of Monday’s rally was also aided by a relatively limited supply of shares. Only about 6.7% of the company’s equity is currently available for public trading, a factor Reuters said likely amplified the stock’s gains on its first day.

What is CXMT?

Founded in 2016, CXMT is China’s largest DRAM memory chipmaker. The company manufactures memory chips used in smartphones, personal computers, cloud servers and AI data centres, where demand has risen sharply with the growth of artificial intelligence. Globally, it competes with industry leaders such as Samsung Electronics, SK Hynix and Micron Technology, which together dominate the DRAM market. Backed by Beijing’s push for semiconductor self-reliance, CXMT has rapidly expanded its presence and is now the world’s fourth-largest DRAM manufacturer by market share.
