India has created more than 1 billion images using OpenAI’s ChatGPT Images 2.0 feature, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said in a post on X on Sunday.

“ChatGPT Images 2.0 loves India. Already more than 1 billion images created there; awesome to see,” Altman wrote.

The post comes weeks after OpenAI said in an April press note that India had become the largest market for ChatGPT Images 2.0 within a week of its launch.

The company had then highlighted several image-generation trends that gained traction among Indian users. According to OpenAI and media reports citing the company’s note, the most popular trends included:

  • Studio Ghibli-style portraits and anime-inspired edits

  • Cinematic selfies and AI-generated movie posters

  • Chibi art and cartoon-style stickers

  • Fashion moodboards and stylised product photography

  • Personalised festival greetings and wedding invites

  • Branded social media creatives and promotional visuals for small businesses

The image-generation feature was rolled out earlier this year as part of ChatGPT, allowing users to generate and edit visuals using text prompts.

The tool quickly went viral across social media platforms, particularly Instagram and X, with users sharing AI-generated portraits, fantasy-style artwork, and reimagined photographs. Several Indian brands and creators also used the feature for digital campaigns and promotional content.

OpenAI’s comments around India’s adoption of the tool come at a time when the country is emerging as one of the company’s fastest-growing markets by users. The company has previously identified India as an important growth region for consumer AI adoption, with more than 100 million users of ChatGPT.

How netizens reacted

The milestone triggered a wave of reactions on X, with users pointing to India’s role in driving mass consumer adoption of internet platforms and AI tools.

“India tends to show you the future of consumer tech faster than most places. When usage reaches this scale that quickly, it usually means the product has crossed from novelty into habit,” one user wrote.

Another post said, “India is such a massive market that it has the power to significantly influence the success or failure of any industries.”

Some users also responded with humour around the limitations of AI-generated visuals. “1 billion images and none of them have the right number of fingers,” another user posted.
