Even as artificial intelligence (AI) reshapes industries worldwide, a majority of Indians remain unfamiliar with the technology, a new study by Google and Kantar has found. According to the survey, 60% of Indians have little to no familiarity with AI, and only 31% have tried using a generative AI tool.

The study, based on responses from over 8,000 people across 18 cities, highlights the vast untapped potential for AI adoption in the country. Despite the low usage rates, interest in leveraging AI for personal growth and productivity remains high. Around 75% of respondents said they would like a "daily growth collaborator" to help them excel in their personal and professional lives.

The findings show a strong underlying demand for tools that enhance productivity, creativity, and communication. About 72% of those surveyed expressed a desire to be more productive, 77% wanted to be more creative, and 73% hoped to communicate more effectively in their daily lives.

Among those who have begun using AI tools such as Google’s Gemini, the impact has been notable. The study found that 92% of Gemini users reported a boost in confidence, 93% said it improved their productivity, and 94% experienced better communication outcomes. The gains were particularly prominent among Gen Z, students, and women.

The survey also shed light on the common challenges that hinder daily growth. These include time constraints, creative blocks, lack of necessary skills, and difficulty in starting new tasks. Notably, 61% of Indians said they had abandoned a creative or professional goal due to such roadblocks.

Beyond work and studies, respondents also expressed a need for support with everyday activities, such as managing budgets, planning travel, or assisting children with homework. Gemini users reported using AI for a wide range of purposes, from simplifying complex information and generating creative ideas to enhancing writing skills and culinary exploration.

As Google expands Gemini’s capabilities with new tools such as Veo 2, Imagen 3, Deep Research, and Gemini Live, the company aims to close the awareness gap and make AI more accessible for everyday use.
