The U.S. administration has announced that the additional 25% tariff on imports from India will be imposed from 12:01 a.m. EDT (9:31 a.m. IST) on August 27, according to a fresh notification issued by Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem.

“The President issued Executive Order 14329 on August 6, 2025, in which he determined that it is necessary and appropriate to impose an additional ad valorem duty of 25 percent on imports of articles from India, which is directly or indirectly importing Russian Federation oil,” the order stated.

The duties will apply to all Indian-origin products cleared for consumption from that date. The executive order also includes a detailed annexure listing Indian items subject to various levels of duties.

“Products of India, except those set forth in Section 3 of Executive Order 14329, that are entered for consumption, or withdrawn from warehouse for consumption, on or after 12:01 a.m. eastern daylight time on August 27, 2025, will be subject to the additional ad valorem duty provided for in new HTSUS heading 9903.01.84,” the order added.

President Donald Trump decided to impose the ad valorem duty on India over its ties with the Russian Federation. Trump referred to India and Russia as “dead economies” and accused India of importing Russian oil and thereby fueling the Ukraine war.
