Volkswagen India will unveil the facelifted version of the Taigun midsize Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV) on April 9. The revamped Taigun will continue to be assembled at the company’s Chakan facility in Maharashtra, which produces its India 2.0 portfolio.

First introduced in 2021, the Taigun marked Volkswagen’s entry into the mid-size SUV segment under its localisation-led strategy. Industry estimates suggest pricing could remain in the ₹11 lakh to ₹19 lakh (ex-showroom) range.

Speaking on the announcement, Nitin Kohli, Brand Director, Volkswagen India, said the new Taigun represents an evolution of the model, combining a more expressive design with technology and performance upgrades expected by customers. He added that the SUV has been engineered locally and is aimed at delivering a balance of capability and everyday usability."

According to him, the upcoming update is expected to bring incremental design and feature changes while retaining existing powertrain options.

“The new Taigun will redefine driving dynamism. Engineered locally and crafted with purpose, the new Taigun is built to inspire confidence, capability, and excitement, every single day,” added Kohli

Segment dynamics and competition

The Taigun operates in the mid-size SUV segment, which has emerged as a key contributor to India’s passenger vehicle market. The category records annual volumes of around 10–12 lakh units and accounts for roughly 25–30% of total PV sales, reflecting a sustained shift towards SUVs.

Key competitors include the Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara and Victoris, Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder and Skoda Kushaq, with the Creta leading the segment.

Volkswagen India has indicated that the updated Taigun will feature revised styling, including sharper character lines and a reworked exterior profile, along with upgrades to in-car technology and driving dynamics. Detailed specifications will be announced at launch.

Since its introduction in 2021, the Volkswagen Taigun has been a key volume driver for Volkswagen India. The company has produced over 1.43 lakh units of the model in India to date, with exports accounting for about 30% of total output. The updated version is expected to build on this base as the company looks to sustain volumes in the segment.

Volkswagen Passenger Cars operates in over 150 markets globally and has been expanding its India portfolio with locally developed models under its India 2.0 strategy. In India, its current line-up includes the Taigun, Virtus sedan and select global imports, with manufacturing anchored at its Chakan facility in Maharashtra.
