As Pirojsha Godrej gets ready to step into the shoes of his father, Adi Godrej, to head Godrej Industries Group (GIG), it’s natural for the industry to compare him with the patriarch of the Godrej family. Ask a GIG employee about Adi and Pirojsha, and the impromptu answer is: both are extremely approachable, and one can walk into their office any time. “Not only are they humble, both father and son also have an eye for numbers. They are strong numbers people,” says a senior leader of the company.

The senior Godrej’s humility is well-known—meet him at his office or call him on his mobile phone, Adi would personally attend the call and greet the caller: "Hello, I am Adi Godrej," the voice at the other end would politely say! At the old Godrej Industries Limited office on the Vikhroli campus, the senior Godrej’s office faced the entrance. He would often stand at the window, and if your eyes met his, he would smile and wave at you.

Vivek Gambhir, former Godrej Consumer MD (currently venture partner, Lightspeed India; and board member, Masters' Union), sees many of Adi’s qualities in Pirojsha. “The same integrity. The same clear-headedness. The same no-nonsense approach. The same ability to bring clarity to complexity and conviction to communication. He, too, has that instinct to look at issues objectively, stay grounded in principles, and keep pushing towards building something enduring.”

“Of course, they belong to different generations and different moments in the group’s journey. Adi helped shape so much of the institution that people admire today. Pirojsha, to my mind, represents the next chapter of that legacy: equally grounded in values, but bringing his own energy, perspective and ambition to the task of taking the group forward,” Gambhir adds.

When the Godrej family split was announced in 2024, Adi’s brother Nadir became chairman of GIG, but it was also announced that Pirojsha would eventually take over from Nadir a couple of years later. Pirojsha is also known to have helmed discussions on the family separation, considered to be among the most amicable’ family splits in corporate history.

The Formation of GIG and GEG

When the initial murmurs of a possible split in the Godrej family surfaced way back in 2019-2020, it was said that the next generation of patriarchs Adi Godrej and Jamshyd Godrej wanted a separation. The Adi Godrej faction includes his three children—Tanya, Nisaba, and Pirojsha — apart from brother Nadir Godrej (currently chairman, Godrej Industries Group). The Jamshyd Godrej group (Godrej Enterprises Group) includes Smita Crishna and her daughter Nyrika Holkar.

The first signs of a rift apparently came when the next generation of the Adi and the Jamshyd families started missing the rather sacrosanct Thursday lunch meets frequently. Even if the cousins made it, there would be uncomfortable conversations among the members of the new generation. The split stemmed from differing growth strategies between the two factions. Adi’s children, known for their ambitious and assertive approach, set a bold target of achieving tenfold growth in 10 years way back in 2011. This aggressive pace clashed with the more measured, steady growth philosophy championed by Jamshyd.

Amidst these dynamics, Jamshyd’s son Navroze, who has a passion for music and design, stepped down from his role as executive director in 2016 after leading design-driven innovations for six years. His departure left a gap, which was filled by Nyrika’s entry into the GEG board in 2017. Since then, Nyrika has carried forward consumer and design initiatives pioneered by Navroze, and is now leading efforts to revitalise furniture retail brand Interio and enhance its omni-channel customer experience.

Consultants, brand experts and analysts who worked closely with both factions believed that the split would enable them to define their positioning better. “The two parts of Godrej were always a bit heterogeneous. The split may potentially allow them to assume sharper positions within their respective, focussed spaces. This can set them free, and help them unlock value,” Ashish Mishra, CEO, Interbrand India & South Asia had said in an interview with Fortune India.

The businesses under Adi were always perceived to be consumer-facing and hence had a better understanding of consumer orientation and the role of brands. Unni Krishnan, founder, The Living Machine Institute, a purpose-led business design advisory, had said in an earlier interview that the primary difference between the two businesses was one of them not wanting to get listed. “The Adi Godrej side has been able to show that companies managed by him can withstand the scrutiny of the markets, and perform in a way that the markets are able to appreciate their long-term value.”

A combination of consumer-first businesses and an appetite to take bold bets makes GIG a favourite of the analyst community. Pirojsha’s commitment to building Godrej for the long term, according to Gambhir, makes this transition inspiring. “It is not simply about succession. It is about the passing forward of a certain way of leading: principled, thoughtful, clear-eyed, and deeply committed to building for the long term.”
