Gurugram-based Juniper Green Energy has claimed to have commissioned India’s first merchant battery energy storage system (BESS) in Bikaner, Rajasthan. A merchant BESS is a grid-connected battery project that operates without a long-term power purchase agreement, earning revenues by participating directly in electricity markets.

In a statement, the independent renewable power producer said it has commissioned 60 MWh of its planned 100 MWh BESS project through its subsidiary, Juniper Green Cosmic Private Limited. The project has completed trial operations, received approval from the Northern Regional Load Despatch Centre (NRLDC), and commenced commercial operations on December 24, 2025.

The company said the remaining 40 MWh capacity is expected to be commissioned shortly. Once fully operational, the Bikaner facility will rank among the largest merchant BESS installations in India. Juniper Green expects the project to generate revenues through multiple streams, including peak power arbitrage, grid balancing services, and participation in ancillary markets.

“The commissioning of our first merchant BESS underscores Juniper Green Energy’s execution strength and strategic focus on emerging opportunities in energy storage. We view BESS as a key value-accretive asset class that complements our renewable portfolio and enhances diversification while supporting grid reliability,” said Ankush Malik, CEO, Juniper Green Energy.

Besides, Juniper Green Energy is advancing its Fatehgarh, Rajasthan, project, where 400 MWh of BESS capacity has already been installed and is slated for commissioning by Q1 2026. This will further strengthen the company’s energy storage portfolio and long-term growth visibility.

Battery energy storage systems are increasingly critical to India’s energy transition, enabling grid stability, renewable integration, peak demand management, and efficient use of transmission infrastructure.

Juniper plans to deploy BESS across all its solar project sites connected to the ISTS grid, creating an integrated renewable-plus-storage platform that is both scalable and strategically positioned for growth.
