The four-week run of The Phantom of the Opera at the Nita Mukesh Ambani Cultural Centre (NMACC) marked a significant moment in India’s cultural calendar, with the production attracting over 55,000 viewers, making it NMACC’s most successful international musical in the past year.
Premiering on March 5, 2025, the production saw 32 performances, and recreation of the Paris Opera House through elaborate sets, a live orchestra, and a team of over 100 people, including 37 cast members, 17 musicians, and a touring crew, according to an official statement.
The show coincided with NMACC’s second anniversary. NMACC backed the musical with an extensive marketing campaign, while CGI visuals of the Phantom’s mask were projected over the Bandra-Worli Sea Link.
The statement adds that NMACC has so far hosted more than 7,000 artists and welcomed over 2 million visitors. Previous productions include The Sound of Music, MAMMA MIA!, Matilda the Musical, Life of Pi, and The Great Indian Musical: Civilization to Nation.
As cultural centre enters its third year, NMACC plans to continue showcasing big productions and expanding its cultural programming.
One of the most iconic musicals of all time, The Phantom of the Opera is composed by Andrew Lloyd Webber and based on Gaston Leroux’s 1910 novel Le Fantôme de L’Opéra. Since premiering in London’s West End in 1986, it has become Broadway’s longest-running show, enchanting audiences with its haunting score, opulent sets, and a narrative woven with love, obsession, and tragedy.
The story follows the enigmatic Phantom, who lurks beneath the Paris Opera House, fixated on young soprano Christine Daaé. Torn between being her mentor and tormentor, he stops at nothing to shape her destiny. With legendary songs like The Music of the Night and All I Ask of You, the musical is hailed as ‘the most breathtaking love story on stage.’
