Jio’s 5G surge, record data traffic and booming broadband fuel double-digit revenue, profit growth at India’s largest telco

Reliance Jio has crossed 524 million subscribers, further cementing its position as India's largest telecom operator, while its 5G user base has surpassed 268 million, making it the largest for any single-country operator outside China. The company added 77 million 5G subscribers during FY26, underscoring the rapid adoption of its next-generation network.

Speaking at Reliance Industries' 49th annual general meeting, Akash Ambani, Managing Director, Jio Platforms, said Jio's scale has reached an "extraordinary" level within a decade of launch.

The company also highlighted the rapid expansion of its fixed wireless broadband business. JioAirFiber, which became the world's largest fixed wireless broadband operator last year, now connects 13 million homes across India. Total data traffic on Jio's network reached 241 exabytes in FY26, up 30.8% year-on-year, placing the company among the world's largest data operators.

The growth translated into strong financial performance for Jio Platforms. Revenue for FY26 rose 14.6% year-on-year to ₹1,46,885 crore, while EBITDA increased 18.8% to ₹76,255 crore. EBITDA margin improved by 190 basis points to 51.9%. Profit after tax crossed ₹30,000 crore for the first time in the company's history, growing 15.1% from a year earlier.

Looking ahead, Ambani said the next phase of Jio's growth will be driven by wider 5G adoption, broadband expansion, enterprise digitisation, artificial intelligence and global deployment of Jio's technology stack.

"Our target is to migrate all subscribers to 5G by 2030 while advancing India's leadership position in 6G standards," he said.

According to Ambani, more than 90% of JioAirFiber installations are completed within 24 hours, while home broadband connections are growing at a rate of up to 60,000 per day. Highlighting the growing demand for data services, he said per-capita data consumption on Jio's network has reached 42.3 GB per month, among the highest levels globally.

"This number will only grow as Jio migrates more Indians to 5G and as AI-enabled use cases proliferate," Ambani said.

Jio brings AI directly into phone calls

Alongside the network and business update, Jio unveiled a consumer-facing artificial intelligence platform that will be integrated directly into voice calls. "Every day, Jio carries 20 billion minutes of voice, making us one of the largest voice carriers in the world," Ambani said.

"We are building AI directly into the heart of the Jio network. No app to download, no number to add, available to every Jio customer in every Indian language," Ambani said. The company said the service will be rolled out to Jio's more than 500 million subscribers later this year.

The AI assistant can transcribe calls in real time, identify up to 10 speakers on a conference call, generate summaries, create action items and reminders, and share notes with participants after the call ends. It can also perform tasks such as ordering food, booking a cab, reserving a restaurant table or scheduling meetings without requiring users to leave the call.

MyJio to become an AI-powered advisor

Reliance also announced a major overhaul of the MyJio app, which Kiran Thomas, President, Reliance Industries, said is used by more than 600 million customers.

Instead of navigating through menus and settings, users will be able to interact with the app through voice or text and simply state the task they want completed. During the demonstration, the AI assistant helped users transfer connections, identify suitable roaming packs, receive usage alerts, complete self-KYC processes and activate services.

"You'll no longer navigate MyJio. You say what you need, and MyJio starts working," Thomas said. The company said the service will support major Indian languages and operate with user consent. Any payment-related action will continue to require explicit confirmation from customers.
