With the big-ticket theatrical releases still a few weeks away, streaming platforms are leading the entertainment lineup this weekend with a steady flow of films and series across languages and genres. From the animated blockbuster Zootopia 2 making its OTT debut on JioHotstar on March 13 to the much-anticipated return of Aspirants with its third season, which began streaming on Prime Video on March 13, viewers have a mix of drama, comedy, romance and family entertainment to choose from. Meanwhile, theatres are offering a smaller slate of indie and regional films.

OTT releases this week

Among the most prominent streaming releases is Zootopia 2, which begins its digital run on JioHotstar on March 13. The sequel to the hugely popular animated film continues the story of detectives Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde as they investigate a mysterious reptile linked to a deeper conspiracy in the city. Blending humour, mystery and social commentary, the film was one of the biggest global box-office successes last year and is expected to draw significant viewership on streaming as well.

The return of Aspirants on Prime Video is likely to generate strong interest among fans of the coming-of-age drama. The third season, which premiered on Prime Video on March 13, picks up with Abhilash, now serving as a district magistrate, who faces a career-threatening inquiry while juggling professional responsibilities and personal relationships. As in previous seasons, the narrative moves between present-day developments and flashbacks to the characters’ UPSC preparation days in Delhi’s Mukherjee Nagar.

Netflix’s slate this week includes the Tamil-language romantic drama Made in Korea, which has skipped a theatrical release to debut directly on Netflix on March 12. Directed by Ra Karthik and starring Priyanka Mohan, the film follows a young woman from rural Tamil Nadu who travels to Seoul chasing her fascination with Korean pop culture. What begins as a dream journey soon turns into a struggle as she confronts isolation, language barriers and personal setbacks.

Also streaming this week is Pookie on ZEE5, where it premiered on March 12. A Gen Z relationship drama, the film explores the fallout of a viral public argument between a couple in a long-term relationship and looks at how social media scrutiny and personal ego complicate modern relationships. Another regional release on Netflix is Funky, which began streaming on March 13. The satirical comedy follows an aspiring filmmaker whose ambitious project spirals out of control as its budget escalates, triggering chaos on set and an unexpected romance.

ZEE5 is also premiering Bhartha Mahasayulaku Wignyapthi, which started streaming on the platform on March 13. The Telugu comedy-drama starring Ravi Teja follows a winemaker who finds himself caught between his marriage and a fleeting romance that returns to complicate his life. Meanwhile, JioHotstar is adding The Family McMullen, which releases on the platform on March 15. A continuation of Edward Burns’ 1995 indie drama The Brothers McMullen, the film revisits the lives of the Irish-American McMullen brothers decades later as they deal with midlife relationships, family tensions and unexpected personal challenges.

In theatres this week

While OTT platforms dominate the weekend’s entertainment lineup, theatres are offering a handful of new releases. Among them is the romantic drama Reminders of Him, adapted from Colleen Hoover’s bestselling novel, which releases in cinemas on March 13. The film follows a woman who returns to her hometown after serving time in prison, hoping to rebuild her life and reconnect with her daughter, only to face resistance from the community.

Horror fans can opt for Undertone, a paranormal thriller releasing in theatres on March 13 and centred on a podcast host investigating unexplained noises in a couple’s home, while comedy lovers may gravitate toward Solo Mio, which also releases in cinemas on March 13 and tells the story of a man who travels to Rome for his honeymoon alone after being left at the altar.

Taken together, the weekend’s lineup reflects the growing dominance of streaming platforms in shaping viewing habits. With new seasons of popular shows, regional-language films and international hits arriving on OTT, audiences have more reasons than ever to stay in and stream rather than head to the cinema—at least until the next wave of big theatrical releases arrives.
