Hyundai Motor India on Monday announced the name of its upcoming Bayon, a new model that will expand the automaker’s presence in the premium compact SUV segment. The South Korean carmaker stated that the model has been developed for an evolving Indian market and will combine its global design and product philosophy with a technology-led experience.
The India-spec Bayon is expected to be positioned between Hyundai’s sub-4-metre Venue and mid-size Creta, creating a new offering in the company’s SUV portfolio. As per sources, the SUV is estimated to be priced from ₹10 lakh onwards.
Industry estimates suggest the SUV could measure around 4.18 metres, giving it a larger footprint than conventional sub-4-metre compact SUVs. It is expected to compete with the Maruti Suzuki Fronx and other premium urban crossovers.
Bayon expected with petrol, CNG options
Hyundai has not yet disclosed the Bayon’s engine specifications. However, industry inputs indicate that the India-spec model could be offered with petrol and CNG powertrain options, with a 1.2-litre TGDI turbo-petrol engine among the expected configurations. The CNG option could give Hyundai an additional proposition for buyers looking for lower running costs.
The upcoming SUV is also expected to feature a technology-heavy cabin, with industry reports pointing to a dual-screen cockpit, 360-degree camera and Level 2 Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS). These features could help Hyundai position the Bayon above conventional compact crossovers in terms of technology and safety equipment.
October launch could target festive demand
The Bayon is expected to arrive during the 2026 festive season, potentially around October. Industry estimates peg its starting ex-showroom price at approximately Rs 10 lakh, with top variants potentially reaching Rs 16–17 lakh. Such pricing would position the SUV between compact and mid-size SUV offerings.
Commenting on the name reveal, Tarun Garg, Managing Director & CEO, Hyundai Motor India, said the Bayon represents “a new mindset” for the company, with an emphasis on creating intelligent, intuitive and meaningful customer experiences. Garg said Hyundai sees each new product as an opportunity to push itself further and that the company has sought to make technology “effortless and seamlessly integrated” into customers’ everyday lives.
The name Bayon draws inspiration from Bayonne, a city in France’s Basque Country. Hyundai said the name reflects its global design philosophy while marking the arrival of an SUV created for an evolving India, with a new spirit of adventure.
