Passenger Vehicle (PV) retail sales climbed 28.63% year-on-year (YoY) to a record 4,10,853 units in June, buoyed by rising demand for CNG, hybrid and electric models, improved vehicle availability and resilient rural buying. The momentum lifted overall automobile registrations to an all-time high of 25,57,234 units, up 21.83% YoY, making it the best-ever June for the Indian auto retail industry, according to the data shared by Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA).

Passenger Vehicles (PV) emerged as the fastest-growing mainstream segment during the month, comfortably outpacing two-wheelers, commercial vehicles and three-wheelers. Registrations also increased 2.05% over May, signalling sustained consumer demand despite the delayed and uneven onset of the southwest monsoon in parts of the country.

FADA stated that the record June performance reflects the structural strength of India’s automobile market, aided by improving OEM supplies and healthy demand across both urban and rural markets.

Alternative-fuel vehicles emerge as the biggest growth lever

The biggest structural shift in the passenger vehicle market came from the rapid adoption of alternative-fuel vehicles. Their share in total PV registrations crossed the 40% mark for the first time, reaching 40.35%, led by CNG vehicles at 24.33%, followed by hybrids at 8.27% and battery electric vehicles (EVs) at 7.75%. Passenger EV registrations touched an all-time high of 31,823 units during the month, underlining the growing consumer preference for cleaner mobility options.

FADA President C. S. Vigneshwar attributed the record June performance to improving OEM supplies following easing geopolitical disruptions, softer crude oil prices after the West Asia ceasefire and resilient consumer sentiment.

According to him, “Rural India continued to outpace urban markets, with passenger vehicle registrations rising 35.09% YoY compared with 24.67% growth in urban centres. Sequentially, however, rural demand remained subdued because of the delayed onset of the monsoon.”

The auto retail body also flagged rising passenger vehicle inventory, which increased to 32-34 days—well above its recommended benchmark of 21 days—and urged manufacturers to align wholesale dispatches more closely with retail demand during the monsoon period.

Overall auto registrations scale fresh highs

The record passenger vehicle performance was mirrored across most vehicle categories, resulting in the strongest June ever for India’s automobile market. Two-wheeler retail sales rose 21.22% YoY to 18,28,458 units, commercial vehicle registrations increased 16.88% to 90,972 units, while three-wheeler sales climbed 16.20% to 1,20,889 units. Tractor registrations also remained robust, rising 25.31% to 1,00,818 units to record their second-best June ever. Wheeled construction equipment was the only segment to witness a decline, with registrations falling 40.94% YoY.

Dealers upbeat ahead of festive season

Meanwhile, FADA expects demand momentum to continue in the coming months as monsoon activity gathers pace and the festive season approaches. More than 51% of dealers expect sales to grow in July, while 66.17% anticipate growth during the July-September quarter, supported by Kharif sowing, improving rural cash flows, stable vehicle supplies and new model launches.

Dealers, however, remain watchful of uneven rainfall, further vehicle price hikes and elevated inventory levels in the passenger vehicle segment.
