Rani Kapur, the matriarch of the Kapur family and the mother of late Sunjay Kapur, broke her silence on Tuesday amid a highly publicised family feud over the control of Sona Comstar . Speaking to ANI, she said that she needs closure about the circumstances that led to her son’s unexpected death within her lifetime.

“I still don’t know what happened to my son. I’m old now, and I need closure before I go,” Kapur told the news agency. Her comments follow Sona Comstar turning up the heat by reportedly sending her a cease-and-desist letter to preclude her from spreading any claims or information that might harm the interests of the company, The Economic Times reported on Tuesday, citing people familiar with the matter.

The letter reportedly has also asked Rani Kapur to withdraw the letter she sent on the eve of the company’s AGM to the board, shareholders, and other stakeholders within 24 hours, claiming significant reputational and financial damages solely due to the letter she sent. The notice has also reportedly warned her that failure to comply with the notice within three days will result in criminal and civil charges against her and those involved with her. Sona Comstar also questioned the timing of the “ill-advised and factually wrong” letter, a day before the AGM, insinuating that Rani Kapur had a motive to cause harm to the company and contravene the law, calling her actions “lamentable.”

Kapur also said that she is here to remind people that the legacy of Sona Comstar should not be lost. “I may be frail and old now, but my memory of being with my husband when Sona Comstar was set up is strong. I remember the early days of Sona Comstar, built with care, sacrifice, and love. I am here to remind the world that our family legacy must not be lost. It must be passed on as my husband always wanted to be,” she explained.

Rani Kapur also alluded to the fact that her legal team will address all necessary matters. While not spelling out the details of what legal recourse she might take, Kapur is reportedly expected to move to the National Company Law Tribunal in Chandigarh. The ET report adds that Kapur might be compelled to take the NCLT route for immediate and punitive relief, blocking all information and bank accounts she has.

The feud between Rani Kapur and Sona Comstar’s management became public after the letter she sent, which made many sensational allegations, including expressing consternation and scepticism about the reasons behind Sunjay Kapur’s death, being made to sign certain documents under duress, and alleging that some within the company are attempting to usurp the family legacy.

The automotive component maker, however, rubbished all of the allegations she levelled, saying that neither Rani Kapur is a shareholder in the company nor Sona Comstar is a family-run business. The promoters own a 29.01% stake in the company through a promoter entity, which grants them a single seat on the board; however, the promoter entity cannot vote or decide on matters related to the company.
