Tata Motors Ltd said it has achieved a significant milestone in FY25 by filing 250 patents and 148 design applications — it’s highest-ever in a single year.
These filings encompass a broad spectrum of product and process innovations, aligning with key automotive trends such as connectivity, electrification, sustainability, and safety (CESS), as well as emerging technologies like hydrogen-based vehicles and fuel cells.
Additionally, they cover various vehicle systems, including battery, powertrain, body and trim, suspension, brakes, HVAC, and emission control. The company also filed 81 copyright applications and secured 68 patent grants during the year, bringing its total granted patents to 918.
“The record-breaking number of patents and design applications filed in FY25 underscores the company’s unwavering commitment to enhancing vehicle performance and safety,” the Tata group company said in a statement.

Homegrown auto giant Tata Motors emerged as India’s second-largest carmaker in March 2025 after selling more cars than South Korean carmaker Hyundai Motor India and Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M). Tata Motors clocked 47,157 registrations in March of which 42,479 were fossil fuel-powered cars and 4,678 were EVs, according to data sourced from Vahan.
Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M) secured the third spot in terms of volumes. M&M recorded retail sales of 46,313 vehicles in March: 44,698 ICE (internal-combustion engine) sport utility vehicles and 1,615 electric vehicles. M&M started deliveries of its electric origin SUVs last month.
Hyundai Motor India, with retail sales of 42,368 units, occupied the fourth spot in passenger vehicle sales for the second consecutive month. M&M had overtaken Hyundai to become the second biggest carmaker in February.
The Tata Motors Group global wholesales in Q4 FY25, including Jaguar Land Rover (excluding China joint venture) were at 3,66,177, lower by 3%, as compared to Q4 FY24. Global wholesales of all Tata Motors’ commercial vehicles and Tata Daewoo range in Q4 FY25 were at 1,07,765, lower by 3%, over Q4 FY24. Global wholesales of Tata Motors passenger vehicles in Q4 FY25 were at 1,46,999, lower by 6% as compared to Q4 FY24. Global wholesales for Jaguar Land Rover were 1,11,413 vehicles, higher by 1% as compared to Q4 FY24.
