Union Minister of Communications Jyotiraditya Scindia on Thursday said the government aims to transform India Post from a “cost centre” into a “profit centre” by 2029-30, as part of a broader push to modernise and financially strengthen the postal network.

Addressing an event after inaugurating the renovated Nehru Place Post Office in Delhi, Scindia said India Post’s operational expenses currently exceed its earnings.

“Our expenses are more than our earnings. We are Government of India cost centres,” he said, adding that nearly 4.5 lakh employees of India Post have resolved to convert these cost centres into profit-generating entities over the next few years.

The minister highlighted the scale of India Post’s operations, stating that the department delivers nearly 7.5 crore parcels and 90 crore mails annually across the country.

He also noted the growing role of postal services in citizen-centric initiatives. Since the launch of Post Office Passport Seva Kendras (POPSKs), more than 2.12 crore passports have been issued through post offices, he said.

Scindia further said India Post Payments Bank has added 13 crore subscribers within four years, while deposits in post office savings banks have crossed ₹23 lakh crore.

The renovated Nehru Place Post Office features upgraded customer service zones, contemporary architectural elements, and an optimised layout as part of the Department of Posts’ ongoing infrastructure modernisation programme.

Separately, Scindia referred to the recently announced ₹2,500 crore defence manufacturing plant by Adani Group in the Kolaras area of his Guna parliamentary constituency in Madhya Pradesh.

The facility, expected to generate around 2,000 direct jobs, will be set up near Kolaras at the junction of the Kota Highway and Mumbai-Gwalior Highway. Scindia said the plant would help address long-standing demands for industrial development in the region and contribute to strengthening India’s defence manufacturing capabilities.
