Reliance Industries Ltd plans to build a luxurious, seven-star Oberoi hotel in the heart of Assam, RIL chairman and managing director Mukesh Ambani said Tuesday at the Advantage Assam 2.0 Investment & Infrastructure Summit in Guwahati.

Ambani didn’t share much details saying the move aims to boost high-end hotel and hospitality economy in Assam.

In 2023, India’s largest private sector company tied up with The Oberoi Hotels and Resorts (Oberoi) to jointly manage three properties across India and the U.K.

These include the Anant Vilas Hotel in Mumbai’s Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC), the iconic Stoke Park in the U.K., and another planned project in Gujarat.

The Ambani family, which owns the world's most expensive private residential home, Antilia, in Mumbai, had bought Britain's iconic country club and luxury golf resort, Stoke Park, for an estimated ₹592 crore in April 2021. Reliance Industries acquired a controlling stake in Mandarin Oriental New York, a five-star hotel in midtown Manhattan for $98 million.

At the Assam investment summit, Ambani said Reliance had committed an investment of ₹5,000 crore in Assam in 2018. “Since then, our investment in the state has exceeded ₹12,000 crore. In the coming years, Reliance will more than quadruple this investment in Assam to over Rs 50,000 crore over the next five years in the following five priority areas,” he said.

Ambani said the conglomerate wants to help Assam become a major supplier of food and non-food consumer products to national and international markets. “We will set up a Mega Food Park, which will add value to the abundant agricultural and horticultural produce of Assam. We have already set up a world-class bottling plant in Assam for our Campa Cola and Independence range of packaged drinking water,” he said.

India’s largest retailer also plans to double the number of Reliance Retail stores in the state from existing 400 to 800 stores in the next five years.

On Reliance Foundation’s work in Assam, Ambani said, “Assam has a rich heritage of arts and crafts. It is one of the largest producers of bamboo, which is called “Green Gold”. And “Sualkuchi”, the center of Assam’s famous silk Industry, has the potential to grow manifold in generation of incomes and jobs. Reliance Foundation, together with our ‘Swadesh’ stores, would like to collaborate with the state government to promote this heritage.”
