Willie Walsh formally takes charge as the new CEO of India's largest airline, IndiGo

Willie Walsh on Monday officially assumed charge as the chief executive officer (CEO) of IndiGo, marking the beginning of a new leadership phase for India's largest airline.
The airline said Walsh will lead its overall management and strategic direction, with a focus on expanding its international network, improving operational performance, strengthening commercial strategy and enhancing customer experience.
His appointment was first announced on March 31, less than three weeks after the unexpected exit of former CEO Pieter Elbers following widespread operational disruptions faced by the airline in December last year.
Walsh brings more than four decades of experience in the global aviation industry. A trained pilot, he has previously served as the CEO of Aer Lingus, British Airways and International Airlines Group (IAG). Most recently, he completed his tenure as Director General of the International Air Transport Association (IATA), where he represented airlines worldwide on issues related to policy, sustainability and industry growth.
"IndiGo has built a remarkable legacy over the last two decades, establishing itself amongst the largest airlines in the world in a short span of time," Walsh said after taking charge.
"With India becoming one of the world's fastest-growing aviation markets, the opportunities ahead for IndiGo are immense. There could not be a more exciting and opportune time for me to join IndiGo than now," he added.
IndiGo Managing Director Rahul Bhatia said Walsh's global leadership experience and strategic expertise would play a key role in the airline's next phase of expansion.
"Walsh's extensive global experience in the aviation industry, combined with his operational and strategic expertise, will be instrumental as IndiGo accelerates its international expansion strategy," Bhatia said.
IndiGo has been aggressively expanding its fleet and overseas operations as it seeks to transform itself from a dominant domestic carrier into a global aviation player. The airline currently operates a fleet of more than 430 aircraft and flies nearly 2,200 services daily across domestic and international routes.
Investors reacted positively to the leadership transition, with IndiGo's shares rising 3.72% to ₹5,363.35 on the BSE in morning trade, outperforming the broader market, where the Sensex was up nearly 1%.
