Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday laid the foundation stone and inaugurated development works worth more than ₹9,000 crore in Aizawl, Mizoram, spanning sectors such as railways, roadways, energy, sports, and education. Addressing the gathering via videoconference, the Prime Minister bowed to Supreme God Pathian and expressed regret at being unable to reach Aizawl due to bad weather, despite arriving at Lengpui Airport.
In line with his commitment to world-class infrastructure and last-mile connectivity, Modi dedicated the Bairabi–Sairang rail line, built at a cost of over ₹8,070 crore, connecting the state capital to the Indian Railways network for the first time.
“From today, Aizawl will be on India’s railway map,” he said. Recalling that he had the opportunity to lay the foundation stone for the Aizawl railway line a few years ago, the Prime Minister dedicated the railway line to the people of the nation.

The project, executed in difficult terrain, includes 45 tunnels, 55 major bridges, and 88 minor bridges. With this, Aizawl has been placed on India’s railway map. Modi underlined that despite many challenges, including difficult terrain, the Bairabi–Sairang rail line has now become a reality. He commended the skills of engineers and the spirit of workers, stating that their efforts made this achievement possible.
He also flagged off three new trains—the Sairang–Delhi Rajdhani Express, the Sairang–Guwahati Express, and the Sairang–Kolkata Express, enhancing connectivity with major cities and boosting opportunities in education, healthcare, trade, and tourism.
In a major boost to road infrastructure, Prime Minister laid the foundation stone for the ₹500 crore Aizawl Bypass Road under the PM-DevINE scheme, which will decongest the city and cut travel time from southern districts by 1.5 hours. He also laid the foundation stone of Chhimtuipui River Bridge on the Lawngtlai–Siaha Road, which will improve connectivity for farmers, horticulture producers, and cross-border trade under the Kaladan Multimodal Transit framework.
In energy, PM Modi laid the foundation stone of 30 TMTPA (thousand metric tons per annum) LPG Bottling Plant at Mualkhang in Aizawl. It will aim at ensuring a steady and reliable supply of LPG in Mizoram and neighbouring states providing easier access to clean cooking fuel.
Highlighting Mizoram’s role in nation-building, the Prime Minister said the people of the state have always contributed with courage and compassion, drawing inspiration from leaders like Lalnu Ropuiliani and Pasaltha Khuangchera. He noted that for the first time, Sairang will be directly connected with Delhi via the Rajdhani Express, calling it a “lifeline of transformation” for Mizoram.
Underscoring the government’s commitment to the North-East, Modi said the region is emerging as India’s “growth engine”. He emphasised that Mizoram will play a major role in the Act East Policy and the North East Economic Corridor, with projects like the Kaladan transport initiative and the Sairang–Hmawngbuchhuah rail line linking it to Southeast Asia.
On reforms, the Prime Minister said recent GST rate cuts have reduced the tax burden on essentials, medicines, and hotels, making life more affordable and boosting tourism. “India’s economy has recorded a growth of 7.8% in the first quarter of 2025–26. This means India is the fastest growing major economy in the world”, exclaimed Modi, stating that the country is also witnessing strong growth in Make In India and exports.
He noted that India grew 7.8% in Q1FY26, making it the world’s fastest-growing major economy, and stressed that the growth of manufacturing and infrastructure is strengthening national security.
