Information technology behemoth Infosys today came down heavily on reports suggesting that the company was in the process of laying off over 400 trainees after their failure to pass evaluation tests.

In a statement, Infosys pointed out that it has always followed an ethical and rigorous process of hiring freshers, who have to undergo extensive foundational training at their Mysuru campus.

“At Infosys, we have a rigorous hiring process where all freshers, after undergoing extensive foundational training at our Mysuru campus, are expected to clear internal assessments," the company said.

The company further said that every fresher gets three opportunities to clear the assessments, failing which their presence as the company's employee is jeopardised.

As India continues to be the world’s fastest-growing major economy, Fortune India presents its special issue on the nation’s Top 100 Billionaires. Curated in partnership with Waterfield Advisors, this year’s list reflects a slight decline in the number of dollar billionaires—from 185 to 182—even as the entry threshold for the Top 100 rose to ₹24,283 crore, up from ₹22,739 crore last year. From stalwarts like Mukesh Ambani, Gautam Adani, and the Mistry family, who continue to lead the list, to major gainers such as Sunil Mittal and Kumar Mangalam Birla, the issue goes beyond the numbers to explore the resilience, ambition, and strategic foresight that define India’s wealth creators. "All freshers get three attempts to clear the assessment, failing which they will not be able to continue with the organization, as is also mentioned in their contract. This process has been in existence for over two decades and ensures a high quality of talent availability for our clients,” the company noted.

The company further clarified that the number of freshers who have been asked to leave the organisation is just above 300 and not 400, as news reports have claimed.

Infosys's statement today comes in the wake of news reports earlier in the day which claimed that the company had forcefully laid off over 400 to 700 employees in its Mysuru campus. Nascent Information Technology Employees Senate (NITES), a labour union working for employees in the IT sector, had said that it was preparing to lodge a formal complaint with the Labour Ministry against Infosys for terminating the aforementioned number of employees.
