“Our roots of drapes and the highly classified handwork engineering of the Indian fashion traditions has been the pulse of world fashion known and applied for centuries. But even in this high digital era of fashion existence the styles, cuts and drapes of Indian fashion has not received much self exposure and appreciation. Though it has been borrowed and applied by various international designers in their own collections, I think only when designers from India are received with high attention on international stages would Indian fashion rise to a haute demand and we would be able to weave India as one of the fashion capitals. Despite being known for its versatile textiles and techniques, India still continues to be a factory of fashion production more and less known for its designers and labels. This is where I want to put my existence as a designer and bring the essence of India onto International Market. To put it more precisely, I want the Indian fashion to be more inclusive in the global fashion empire." says Manjulakshmi Bharathan.
Manjulakshmi Bharathan had already had her red carpet moment at the Oscars, when the custom designed couture from her organic label AADIMA was listed among the best dresses at the Academy Red Carpet and celebrated by International Media in 2019. Gills Manjulakshmi was also awarded as Grazia Best Modest Wear Brand in Qatar.
After Showcasing her Haute A Porter collections at New York Fashion Week 2018, the following year she was appointed as the Director and Producer for Shows of Designers of MENA region. In 2019 with success of producing her first shows for 2 Qatari Jewelry and Fashion Designers at NEW YORK FASHION WEEK, she has recently taken up the role as Director Of Shows for Designers for Asia.
Observing the decade's International and Indian fashion market, she says "Last two decades have seen the rise of more sustainable Indian design entrepreneurs coming with innovative creations which is exclusively brilliant but has stayed limited to India, and I feel that with the given position as Producer of Shows at New York Fashion Week I can do more of my karma bringing these unique Indian design talents and positioning the Indian labels on International frontage."
Manjulakshmi Bharathan had won international appreciation for her designs at Gills Manjulakshmi which embodies drapes and eclectic styling and has worked with films and International Designers for their shows including Eric Gaskins, Stephane Rolland etc.
