India’s burgeoning digital and creative economy is set for a transformational leap as the Indian Institute of Creative Technologies (IICT) opens admissions for its first batch of students this August, offering a robust portfolio of 18 industry-driven courses in the AVGC-XR (Animation, Visual Effects, Gaming, Comics, and Extended Reality) sector.

The institute, announced by Union Minister of Information & Broadcasting Ashwini Vaishnaw at the Waves Summit in May, is backed by global partnerships and industry leaders.

The inaugural academic offering includes six specialised courses in gaming, four courses in post production, eight courses in animation, comics and extended reality.

These programmes have been meticulously designed in collaboration with top industry players to ensure students are equipped with the skills required to thrive in the ever-evolving creative technology landscape.

Just two weeks ago, IICT signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the University of York, UK, paving the way for collaborative research, faculty exchange, and global certification pathways.

Adding to its strong foundation, leading global companies such as Google, Adobe, Meta, Microsoft, NVIDIA and JioStar have committed to long-term collaborations with IICT. Their support covers curriculum development, scholarships, internships, startup incubation, and placement opportunities.

Speaking on these courses, Vishwas Deoskar, CEO of IICT, said, “Our vision is to make India a global powerhouse in the AVGC-XR sector by nurturing world-class talent. These courses are designed to meet global standards while being rooted in India’s dynamic creative potential.”

A more detailed curriculum will be announced this month.

With the global AVGC-XR industry projected to grow exponentially, IICT said its comprehensive course offerings promise to build a future-ready talent pool for India and beyond.

The government, in collaboration with FICCI and CII, unveiled the Indian Institute of Creative Technology (IICT) in May this year. The IICT is located at the Dadasaheb Phalke Film City, Goregaon, Mumbai, and serves as a centre of excellence for education, research, innovation, and skill development in the AVGC-XR domain.

While announcing the institute earlier this year, Vaishnaw said that the IICT will create the same template in the field of entertainment, media, and films, much like the IITs and IIMs have done in the field of science and management.

"In the last two days, India has taken a novel step in the film, media, and entertainment sector. India can take global leadership in entertainment, media, and films, with the kind of talent we have. We have a billion-plus talent, a five-thousand-year-old civilization, and millions of stories to tell," Vaishnaw had said.
