India’s Formula 1 fever may have hit a new high with the release of Brad Pitt’s F1: The Movie. As of Day 5, the film has posted a modest performance at the domestic box office, collecting ₹28.93 crore net and ₹29.75 crore gross, according to Sacnilk.
Worldwide, F1 has grossed an impressive ₹1,375 crore, driven largely by overseas markets where it has collected ₹800 crore.
Despite being a Hollywood film, F1 has outperformed all Indian releases from the same day (June 27) in India’s net collections. The closest is Kannappa with ₹27.36 crore, followed by Maa at ₹23 crore. Other films like Maargan, Mr & Mrs 420 Again, and Rudra trail far behind. This makes F1 the top performer at the Indian box office for that release window, ahead of Indian cinema’s offerings.
With a five-day India net collection of ₹28.93 crore, F1 has surpassed the Day 5 earnings of Final Destination: Bloodlines (₹25 crore), making it one of the best-performing Hollywood films in India this year. Its strong start at the Indian box office highlights both the growing appeal of Formula One and the film’s broad crossover potential with local audiences.
The movie recorded varying levels of occupancy across language versions in India, with English leading the way at an overall 28.25%. English showings saw steady growth through the day, from 11.32% in the morning to a peak of 42.68% at night. The Tamil version followed with 21.21% overall occupancy, showing strong performance in afternoon (23.39%) and evening (26.43%) shows. The Hindi version saw the lowest traction, with an overall occupancy of just 16.38%.
According to Sacnilk, Ahmedabad emerged as the top-performing city in terms of occupancy, recording an impressive overall rate of 38.25%. The city saw a dramatic surge in viewership by evening and night, with both time slots hitting 59% occupancy—far ahead of other major metros. Mumbai followed with 33.5% overall, while Chennai and Pune closely trailed with around 33% overall occupancy. In contrast, Kochi saw the lowest engagement at 20.25%. The data indicates that audience interest in F1 is peaking in western cities like Ahmedabad and Mumbai, particularly during late-day shows.
While Apple has seen critical success with films like CODA—the only streaming original to win Best Picture—its theatrical track record has been poor. Argylle performed poorly in 2024. However, with F1, Apple appears to have its first genuine box office hit. Directed by Joseph Kosinski, F1 is backed by an impressive lineup of production houses including Plan B Entertainment, Jerry Bruckheimer Films, Monolith Pictures, Apple Studios, and Dawn Apollo Films. The film features a star-studded cast led by Brad Pitt, alongside Javier Bardem, Tobias Menzies, Kerry Condon, and Damson Idris in pivotal roles. The movie taps into Formula One’s surging popularity, featuring real race footage and support from driver-producer Lewis Hamilton. The film has reportedly been made with a $200 million budget.
