Equity fundraising in India’s primary and secondary markets gained momentum in 2026, with companies raising ₹3.04 lakh crore in the first seven months of the year, according to NSE data. This is 72% of the ₹4.2 lakh crore mobilised through equity markets in calendar year 2025, setting the stage for another strong year of equity capital raising.

The sharp increase, however, is being driven less by IPOs and more by preferential issuances and qualified institutional placements (QIPs), which have emerged as key sources of equity capital this year, according to the NSE Market Pulse report for August.

Of the ₹3.04 lakh crore raised between January and July 2026, ₹1.77 lakh crore came through preferential issuances, accounting for nearly 58% of total equity fundraising. QIPs contributed another ₹47,881 crore, while IPOs across the main board and SME segments raised around ₹41,864 crore.

The trend marks a shift from 2025, when IPOs were the standout driver of equity mobilisation. Equity markets saw 220 IPOs in CY25, 103 on the main board and 117 on NSE Emerge, raising ₹1.78 lakh crore, up 6.7% from the previous year. About 60.6% of the amount was raised through offer-for-sale transactions, NSE data showed.

July sees sharp acceleration

Equity fundraising activity surged in July, with overall mobilisation rising 163% month-on-month to ₹1.1 lakh crore, from around ₹43,000 crore in June.

The increase was supported by both IPOs and further issuances. Nineteen companies were listed during July, raising around ₹18,600 crore, with main board listings accounting for most of the proceeds. IPO sentiment also improved, with around 85% of main board IPOs debuting at or above their issue price, according to the NSE report.

Retail participation in main board IPOs increased during the month, even as the share of qualified institutional buyers moderated.

Further issuances provided the bigger boost. Fundraising through this route rose 209% month-on-month to ₹93,400 crore in July, led by preferential issuances. Preferential issues accounted for 68% of further issuances, while QIPs made up the remaining 32%, the NSE said.

Preferential issues gain favour

The growing dominance of preferential issues reflects a broader shift in the way companies are accessing equity capital.

“Fundraising through preferential issuances rose significantly to ₹1.4 lakh crore in the first four months of FY27, up from ₹53,000 crore during the corresponding period last year,” the NSE Market Pulse report said.

The sharp rise in mobilisation comes despite continued global uncertainty, suggesting improving corporate and investor sentiment. The NSE report said the increase indicated “an improvement in sentiment even as markets continue to monitor global headwinds with caution.”
