Behari Lal Engineering shares surge 78% on debut, overtake BCCL as 2026’s top-performing IPO

Shares of Punjab-based Behari Lal Engineering made a blockbuster debut on the stock exchanges on Wednesday, surging more than 78% on the first day of trading and emerging as the best-performing IPO listing of 2026 so far.
The shares of integrated iron and steel manufacturer listed at ₹465 on the NSE, a premium of 63.15% over its IPO price of ₹285. The stock extended its gains during the session, hitting an intraday high of ₹537 apiece, nearly 88.5% from the IPO price.
Behari Lal shares finally closed at ₹508 on the NSE, with a first-day gain of around 78.25% over the issue price. The market capitalisation stood at ₹2,148.97 at the end of trade.
With its strong debut, Behari Lal Engineering overtook Bharat Coking Coal Ltd (BCCL), which had delivered a 76.43% gain on its market debut on January 19, 2026, to become the top-performing IPO of the year based on listing-day closing gains.
Other strong IPO debuts in 2026 include Indo-MIM, which gained 52.95%, followed by MV Electrosystems and Kusumgar Industries at 46.53% each, and Advit Jewels at 30.04%.
₹2,000 crore turnover on debut
Trading activity in Behari Lal Engineering was also robust on its first day. According to NSE data, a total of 376.18 lakh shares changed hands on the exchange, while the traded quantity on BSE stood at 29.68 lakh shares. The combined turnover on BSE and NSE stood at ₹2,030.9 crore on the listing day.
The strong listing followed intense demand for the company's initial public offering. Behari Lal Engineering's ₹285-per-share IPO was subscribed 108.44 times, which opened for bidding between August 12-14.
The issue received bids for 80,38,28,324 equity shares against the 74,12,769 shares on offer, according to stock exchange data.
Demand was particularly strong among institutional and high-net-worth investors. The qualified institutional buyer (QIB) portion was subscribed 165.33 times, while the non-institutional investor portion was subscribed 165.32 times. The retail portion was subscribed 53.27 times.
What analyst says after listing
Shivani Nyati, Head of Wealth at Swastika Investmart, said Behari Lal Engineering is one of India's leading metal-roll manufacturers, with a domestic market share of around 10-11.5%. The IPO had also attracted strong institutional participation, with its anchor book including Tata AIA Life Insurance, PineBridge Global Funds, WhiteOak Capital and Bandhan Mutual Fund.
She noted that the IPO was priced at around 18.7 times its FY26 price-to-earnings ratio, which was below the peer average of around 31 times for companies such as AIA Engineering, Steelcast and Vardhman Special Steels.
"Investors who got allotment could book partial profits into the listing-day strength," Nyati said, while adding that investors taking a longer-term view should maintain a stop-loss of ₹380.
Behari Lal Engineering is an integrated iron and steel manufacturing company specialising in customised engineering solutions. According to CRISIL, the company is one of India's largest metal-roll producers and held a 10-11.5% share of the country's metal-roll demand in fiscal 2026. The company manufactures metal rolls, engineering castings, alloy steel products and forging ingots, catering to user industries such as steel, power and heavy engineering.
It currently operates two manufacturing facilities in Mandi Gobindgarh, Punjab, with capabilities spanning the design, development and manufacturing of its products. The company has also commenced construction of its third manufacturing facility at Mandi Gobindgarh in Fatehgarh Sahib district, Punjab.
