Tata Motors on Wednesday said it has crossed cumulative production of 10 lakh commercial vehicles at its Lucknow facility, with the milestone marked by the rollout of an electric bus, reflecting its ongoing shift towards cleaner mobility solutions alongside its conventional portfolio.

The milestone vehicle was flagged off by Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and N. Chandrasekaran, Chairman of Tata Sons, in the presence of senior state officials and Tata Motors leadership, including Managing Director and CEO Girish Wagh.

The Lucknow plant, operational since 1992, has grown into one of the company’s key commercial vehicle manufacturing hubs, catering to both domestic demand and export markets over the past three decades.

Scale, capacity and export role

Spread across nearly 600 acres, the facility has an installed production capacity of over 1 lakh units annually and produces a wide range of cargo and passenger vehicles across multiple powertrains, including electric and fuel-cell platforms.

Vehicles manufactured at the plant serve diverse commercial mobility applications in India and are also exported to international markets, underlining its role in the company’s global operations.

Chandrasekaran said the milestone reflects the strength of the company’s long-standing partnership with Uttar Pradesh in building manufacturing scale and capabilities, adding that Tata Motors remains committed to supporting the state’s industrial growth and future mobility ecosystem.

Employment and ecosystem impact

The facility supports over 8,000 direct and indirect livelihoods and has helped develop a wider supplier ecosystem, including MSMEs in the region.

It also runs skilling and apprenticeship programmes aimed at building industry-ready talent, aligning with broader efforts to strengthen workforce capabilities in manufacturing.

Adityanath described the rollout as a “moment of pride” for the state, highlighting Uttar Pradesh’s industrial potential, skilled workforce and enabling ecosystem for large-scale manufacturing. He added that industry would play a key role in the state’s broader economic growth ambitions and job creation.

The Lucknow plant operates on 100% renewable electricity and is water-positive, reflecting a growing industry focus on sustainable manufacturing practices. It also deploys automation, robotics and digital technologies to improve operational efficiency and quality.

The milestone comes at a time when India’s commercial vehicle sector is gradually shifting towards alternative fuel technologies, with electric buses emerging as a key segment driven by public transport electrification.
