IndiGo, the Gurugram headquartered airline announced that William “Willie” Walsh, currently the director general of the International Air Transport Association (IATA), a global airline association, will join IndiGo no later than on the 3rd of August, 2026 as its new CEO.

“Mr. Walsh (popularly known as Willie) is currently the Director General of IATA (International Air Transport Association) and was formerly CEO of British Airways and IAG (International Airlines Group, a holding company which owns Aer Lingus, British Airways, Iberia, Level and Vueling),” IndiGo said in a statement.

Walsh’s appointment came after Pieter Elbers, the India-loving CEO of IndiGo, resigned on March 10, a decision that was expeditiously approved by the board of directors of IndiGo. Elbers offered to stay for the transition period, but the board announced that Rahul Bhatia, the founder and managing director of IndiGo, would serve as the interim CEO.

“I am thrilled that Willie will be at helm of IndiGo,” Vikram Singh Mehta, IndiGo’s Chairman said on March 31. “He is an exceptional global aviation leader with a stellar track record of outstanding leadership across several airlines.”

Walsh began his career as a pilot before transitioning to COO and then CEO of Aer Lingus, (2000-2005). He was also the CEO of British Airways, and later the CEO of IAG, the company that owns British Airways, Aer Lingus and Iberia among others. Since 2020, he has been the Director General of IATA (International Air Transport Association) and was in India in June last year when IATA hosted its annual summit in New Delhi.

“In his new role as IndiGo’s CEO, Mr. Walsh will be responsible for the overall management and strategic direction of the airline with a focus on transformational initiatives to strengthen the operational performance, advance the company’s network and commercial strategy while enhancing customer experience,” IndiGo said.

The leadership change, and the mandate for Walsh to improve customer experience, comes on the back of IndiGo’s mishap last year when it cancelled flights abruptly in the first week of December,  affecting over 3 lakh passengers and led to the cancellation of over 2,500 flights. Such was the crisis that, from the aviation watchdog, DGCA, to India’s competition commission, everybody was on IndiGo’s tail.

A committee later set by aviation watchdog DGCA later observed that the airline’s management, under Pieter Elbers, failed to adequately identify planning deficiencies, maintain sufficient operational buffers, and effectively implement the revised Flight Duty Time Limitation (FDTL) provisions, resulting in inconvenience to passengers.

“The primary causes for the disruption were over-optimisation of operations, inadequate regulatory preparedness, along with deficiencies in system software support and shortcomings in management structure and operational control on the part of IndiGo,” a four-member committee constituted by airline regulator DGCA said in its report.

Walsh will now have the mandate to ensure that the airline is back to its ruthless best, especially since it looks to expand its international operations. “Mr. Walsh is widely considered as one of the most successful, respected, influential and long-lasting leaders in modern aviation history,” IndiGo said in the statement. “He is admired for his pragmatic and resolute management, effective complex restructuring, and successful mergers and acquisitions.

IndiGo controls over 65% of the domestic skies, followed by Air India, effectively making it a duopoly. On international routes, IndiGo has also emerged as India’s largest homegrown carrier, making it effectively too big to fail. Over the last few years, the airline has been busy rebranding itself with new offerings such as business-class seats, airline miles, and long-haul international operations.

“As we enter a new phase of transformation and growth, I am delighted to welcome Willie to IndiGo,” Rahul Bhatia, the Managing Director of IndiGo said. “He is an iconic and accomplished aviation leader and brings a rare combination of global perspective, operational expertise of having built strong customer-focused airlines, deep industry experience and a values driven leadership, making him exceptionally suited to lead IndiGo at this pivotal cusp of growth.”
