Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday inaugurated the ₹36,000 crore Ganga Expressway in Hardoi, marking the rollout of one of India’s longest high-speed road corridors completed in under 3.5 years. Spanning 594 km from Meerut to Prayagraj, the project is expected to significantly boost connectivity across Uttar Pradesh while catalysing industrial investment, logistics efficiency and regional economic balance.

Describing the project as transformative, Modi said the expressway would play a role akin to the river Ganga in the state’s evolution. “The way the Ganga has been the lifeline of Uttar Pradesh for thousands of years, this expressway will become a new lifeline for the state’s development,” he said.

Developed by the Uttar Pradesh Expressways Industrial Development Authority (UPEIDA), the six-lane expressway—expandable to eight—connects 12 districts and is designed to reduce travel time between Meerut and Prayagraj from nearly 11 hours to about six hours. The corridor, expected to benefit over 8 crore people, will improve the speed and safety of passenger and freight movement, strengthening links between agricultural regions, industrial clusters and urban centres.

Execution of the project was led by Adani Enterprises Limited, which developed around 464 km (nearly 80%) of the alignment, while IRB Infrastructure Developers Limited handled the remaining stretch, with over 12,000 workers deployed at peak construction.

It was reported recently that investor interest in the corridor has been strong, with 987 Expressions of Interest received so far, collectively worth ₹46,660 crore. The government is targeting close to ₹47,000 crore in investments across manufacturing units, logistics parks, warehousing hubs, e-commerce supply chains, and agro-processing clusters.

High-speed design with strategic infrastructure features

Built under a public-private partnership model, the expressway has a design speed of 120 kmph and incorporates AI-enabled camera systems, along with Intelligent Traffic Management Systems (ITMS), CCTV surveillance, emergency call boxes, ambulances and dedicated patrol units.

A key strategic addition is a 3.2-km airstrip near Shahjahanpur, designed to facilitate emergency landings of Indian Air Force aircraft, adding a defence utility dimension to the project. The corridor also integrates with major expressways such as the Purvanchal, Agra-Lucknow, Bundelkhand and Gorakhpur Link routes, creating a wider high-speed road network across the state.

Industrial corridor push and economic impact

Beyond connectivity, the Ganga Expressway is being developed as an economic corridor with Integrated Manufacturing and Logistics Clusters (IMLCs) planned along its route. These clusters will include warehousing, cold storage and food processing infrastructure aimed at attracting investment and strengthening supply chains.

According to government estimates, the corridor could generate ₹25,000–30,000 crore in annual logistics savings, reduce fuel consumption by around 30%, and create nearly 3 lakh direct and indirect jobs over the next decade. It is also expected to contribute over ₹1 lakh crore to the state’s GDP by improving freight velocity and reducing inventory costs across sectors.

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath described the expressway as a “lifeline” connecting villages, farmers, entrepreneurs and youth, adding that it would accelerate development and reduce regional disparities. Union Minister Pankaj Chaudhary termed it a landmark addition to the country’s infrastructure landscape.

Driving Uttar Pradesh’s growth ambitions

Spanning districts including Meerut, Hapur, Bulandshahr, Amroha, Sambhal, Badaun, Shahjahanpur, Hardoi, Unnao, Rae Bareli, Pratapgarh and Prayagraj, the expressway is expected to unlock new growth centres across western, central and eastern Uttar Pradesh, particularly by integrating the relatively underdeveloped eastern region with the state’s industrial base.

Officials say the project will play a key role in supporting the state’s ambition of becoming a trillion-dollar economy by improving logistics competitiveness, enabling industrial expansion at scale and boosting trade, agriculture and tourism.
