Move strengthens platform’s premium content play with global franchises, as streaming giants double down on aggregation and pricing to win India’s crowded OTT market.

JioHotstar has expanded its partnership with Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD) to bring HBO Max to India, positioning itself as the exclusive distributor of the global streaming service in the country.
The integration, effective immediately, introduces an HBO Max hub within JioHotstar, offering Indian viewers a consolidated library spanning HBO, Max Originals, Warner Bros. Pictures, DC Studios, and Warner Bros. Television. The move underscores a broader shift in strategy among global studios, which are increasingly opting for distribution alliances over standalone direct-to-consumer launches in India.
The partnership comes at a time when India’s streaming market is witnessing intensified competition, rising content costs, and pressure on subscriber monetisation. By embedding HBO Max within its platform, JioHotstar is betting on aggregation—bringing high-value international IP under one roof to drive engagement and reduce churn.
“This marks a defining moment in how premium global content is accessed and experienced in India,” said Kevin Vaz, CEO – Entertainment, JioStar, highlighting the platform’s focus on combining scale, curation, and ease of access.
For WBD, the tie-up enables deeper market penetration without the overheads of building a standalone subscriber base. “India is one of the most vibrant streaming markets globally,” said James Gibbons, President, APAC, WBD, adding that the collaboration will help expand the reach of its premium franchises.
The HBO Max hub brings with it a robust slate of globally recognised titles. Upcoming releases include new seasons of Euphoria and House of the Dragon, as well as the much-anticipated Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone.
The current catalogue features marquee titles such as Succession, The Last of Us, and Game of Thrones—properties that have consistently driven global subscriptions and audience engagement. In a notable addition, long-running sitcoms Friends and The Big Bang Theory will be available on JioHotstar for the first time, further strengthening its library of high-repeat-value content.
JioHotstar will offer the HBO Max hub as an add-on starting at ₹49 per month, a pricing strategy that reflects the platform’s dual focus on affordability and premiumisation. The low entry price could help accelerate adoption in a price-sensitive market while enabling JioHotstar to upsell premium content to its existing user base.
The exclusive partnership highlights a growing trend in India’s OTT ecosystem: the shift from platform proliferation to content consolidation. As subscriber growth plateaus and profitability comes into sharper focus, access to exclusive, globally recognised IP is emerging as a key differentiator.
For JioHotstar, the HBO Max deal strengthens its positioning as a comprehensive entertainment destination, combining international tentpole content with a strong local catalogue. For WBD, it offers scale, distribution efficiency, and a faster route to Indian audiences.
As competition intensifies, such alliances are likely to define the next phase of India’s streaming wars—where content depth, strategic bundling, and pricing innovation will determine market leadership.
