Indigenous Super Pressure Balloon to validate low-cost, reusable high-altitude infrastructure for rural telecom, disaster response and real-time monitoring

Vijayawada-based Red Balloon Aerospace is planning to launch its inaugural Super Pressure Balloon (SPB) from Andhra Pradesh in a couple of months.
The company, which calls itself as India's first indigenous developer of stratospheric infrastructure, terms it as a major step toward unlocking "near space", a high-altitude stratospheric layer between 20 and 40 kilometres beyond the reach of aircraft and satellites.
"We're building the infrastructure layer that doesn't exist yet in India, commercially” said Dr. C. V. S. Kiran, Co-founder and CEO of Red Balloon Aerospace. “Between the ground and space, there's an entire domain that's been underutilized. While satellites cost tens of millions of dollars and take years to deploy, we can put platforms overhead in weeks at a fraction of that cost and crucially, they are fully recoverable for repair, upgrade, and redeployment. For India, this opens up connectivity for hundreds of millions in remote areas, real-time monitoring across millions of square kilometres, and sovereign capabilities we've never had before. Globally, nations are realizing that near space is strategic infrastructure, and India is no longer watching that race from the sidelines." he further adds.
What will the Super Pressure Balloon do
The Super Pressure Balloon will carry a high-resolution imaging payload delivering between 25 and 75 centimetre resolution, among a broader suite of sensor capabilities. Operating as a persistent aerial platform, it can provide telecommunications coverage across underserved and rural regions, monitor large-scale industrial networks spanning hundreds of kilometres, support disaster management operations across entire states, and enable continuous spatial observation for strategic applications. This mission is not just a flight, it will serve as a critical technology validation milestone - the proof point that clears the path to our next generation of platforms, the company claims.
“Near space is no longer a privilege of large budgets. At Red Balloon Aerospace, we are democratising access to the stratosphere. Through rideshare and dedicated missions, any startup, university, or research team in India can now reach near space affordably. This mission demonstrates that rapid, reliable development in near space is achievable. By building on established engineering fundamentals, we've been able to validate critical systems in months instead of years", said Sireesh Pallikonda, Co-Founder and COO of Red Balloon Aerospace.
The launch comes amid rising global demand for stratospheric platforms that can deliver persistent aerial coverage and connectivity at significantly lower deployment costs than conventional satellite systems. With near space infrastructure attracting growing interest from both strategic and commercial stakeholders, the mission positions India as a serious participant in this emerging global sector.
