Auto sales jump 24.3% to 24.11 lakh units in July; PV volumes hit record high of 4.58 lakh units: SIAM

The automobile industry recorded its strongest-ever July sales, with domestic wholesales across passenger vehicles (PVs), two-wheelers, three-wheelers and quadricycles rising 24.3% year-on-year to 24,11,246 units in July 2026 from 19,39,774 units a year earlier, according to data released by the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) on Thursday.

Passenger vehicles led the expansion, with dispatches from manufacturers to dealers jumping 34.3% to a record 4,57,810 units, compared with 3,40,772 units in July 2025. Two-wheeler sales rose 22.6% to 19,23,483 units, while three-wheeler volumes increased 33.4% to 92,560 units.

Commenting on the July performance, SIAM Director General Rajesh Menon said the automobile industry had delivered its strongest-ever July sales, with robust double-digit growth across passenger vehicles, three-wheelers and two-wheelers. Passenger vehicle sales rose 34.3% to 4.58 lakh units, while three-wheeler sales grew 33.4% to 0.93 lakh units and two-wheeler sales increased 22.6% to 19.23 lakh units.

Utility vehicles remain biggest PV segment

Utility vehicles continued to account for the largest share of PV sales, with volumes rising 29.2% to 2,48,895 units in July from 1,92,703 units a year earlier. Passenger car sales, however, grew faster, climbing 37.6% to 1,32,408 units from 96,207 units. Van sales increased 12.6% to 13,896 units.

The detailed SIAM data shows that utility vehicle demand was spread across several size categories. Sales of vehicles measuring 4,000-4,400 mm rose to 90,991 units, while the below-4,000 mm category recorded 95,473 units. Vehicles in the 4,400-4,700 mm category accounted for 41,393 units, while those above 4,700 mm contributed 16,263 units.

Notably, SIAM's headline PV number includes Tata Motors' July domestic sales, although the detailed company-wise data does not provide its July sub-segment break-up. Without Tata Motors and the other manufacturers for which data was unavailable, PV sales stood at 3,95,199 units, up 31.2% year-on-year.

Two-wheelers, three-wheelers post broad-based growth

Two-wheeler sales increased across all three categories. Scooter volumes rose 23.7% to 7,98,190 units, motorcycle sales increased 20.7% to 10,74,796 units, while moped sales recorded the highest growth of 48.6% at 50,497 units.

Three-wheeler sales rose to 92,560 units from 69,403 units in July 2025. Passenger carriers increased 32.9% to 77,994 units, while goods carriers jumped 40.3% to 12,896 units. E-rickshaw sales rose 7.5% to 1,132 units and e-cart volumes increased 16.2% to 538 units.

Production, exports also record strong growth

The industry produced 33,70,958 vehicles across passenger vehicles, two-wheelers, three-wheelers and quadricycles in July, up 24.8% from 27,02,121 units a year earlier. Exports rose 25.1% to 6,77,122 units from 5,41,282 units.

Menon stated that the positive momentum had been sustained over several months and had continued as the industry entered the festive season. He added, “The industry was entering the period with expectations of strong consumer sentiment, setting the stage for another important phase of demand after the strong July performance.”
