BMW India kicks off bookings for locally made i5 LWB; electric sedan gets claimed 669-km range

BMW India has opened bookings for the i5 Long Wheelbase (LWB), which will be manufactured at the company’s Chennai plant. The model will be BMW India’s first locally produced electric sedan and the second electric BMW to be manufactured at the facility.
The booking announcement comes as BMW reports a 17% increase in sales in the first half of 2026, with the company delivering more than 9,000 cars in India. Electric vehicle sales rose 78% during the period, while long-wheelbase models accounted for more than half of the company’s sales.
BMW i5 LWB gets 669-km claimed range
The i5 LWB measures 5,175 mm in length, 2,156 mm in width and 1,520 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 3,105 mm. The sedan is equipped with an 81.6-kWh battery, with BMW claiming a range of up to 669 km on the MIDC cycle.
It produces 268 hp and can accelerate from 0-100 kmph in 6.7 seconds. BMW has also fitted the India-specification model with adaptive rear-axle air suspension and increased ground clearance.
BMW has not yet announced the price of the i5 LWB. The company said the model will reach the Indian market in the coming weeks.
LWB models account for over half of sales
BMW Group India President and CEO Hardeep Singh Brar said the company sold more than 9,000 cars during the first half of 2026.
“We have had a fantastic first half (of 2026), delivered over 9,000 cars, grew by 17 per cent, and our EV is growing by 78 per cent,” Brar said.
He said long-wheelbase models grew 24% during the period, while SUVs increased 35%. LWB models contributed more than 50% of BMW India’s sales, making the format a significant part of its current product mix.
BMW currently offers LWB versions across several models in India, including the iX1, 3 Series, 5 Series and 7 Series.
BMW plans 25 launches in India this year
BMW has announced plans to introduce 25 new models in India in 2026, with 13 launches completed by Friday, according to Brar.
The i5 LWB will add another locally manufactured EV to that line-up. BMW has not disclosed the production volume planned for the model or its launch price.
The company’s Chennai plant currently manufactures BMW models for the Indian market, with the i5 LWB becoming the second electric model to be produced there.
