Daimler India Commercial Vehicles (DICV), the maker of BharatBenz trucks and buses, has outlined an additional investment of around ₹4,000 crore in Tamil Nadu, taking its cumulative investment in India to more than ₹14,500 crore as the commercial vehicle maker prepares for the next phase of growth. The proposed investment, announced through a non-binding facilitation Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Tamil Nadu government, is expected to support BharatBenz product development, manufacturing, research and development, infrastructure and future technology readiness. The investment is also expected to create around 400 jobs over the proposed period. BharatBenz crosses 2.2 lakh vehicles on Indian roads BharatBenz, which entered the Indian market in 2012, has so far put more than 220,000 trucks and buses on Indian roads. Its products cater to freight movement, construction, mining, logistics and passenger mobility applications. DICV operates an integrated 400-acre manufacturing and R&D facility at Oragadam near Chennai, with more than 4,000 employees. The company’s Indian supplier ecosystem comprises over 400 local suppliers and accounts for approximately 92% localisation of BharatBenz product value. The company has also built a nationwide network of more than 420 dealer and service touchpoints across key freight corridors, industrial clusters and regional markets. Its recently launched Parts Logistics Centre in Pune is aimed at improving parts availability and supporting vehicle uptime. India gains bigger role in Daimler Truck’s global network Beyond the domestic market, DICV has increasingly positioned India as a manufacturing, sourcing and engineering base for Daimler Truck. The company has exported more than 75,000 trucks and buses and over 330 million parts to more than 70 markets. DICV also supplies transmissions manufactured in Chennai to Daimler Truck plants in Germany, giving its Indian operations a role beyond BharatBenz’s domestic requirements. “BharatBenz was built for India, and this investment reflects our confidence in the next phase of the country’s commercial vehicle growth,” said Torsten Schmidt, Managing Director and CEO, DICV. He added that expanding infrastructure, logistics, mining, construction and passenger mobility would drive demand for commercial vehicles offering higher uptime, safety, reliability and operating efficiency. The proposed investment comes as India’s commercial vehicle ecosystem continues to expand on the back of infrastructure development, logistics activity and industrial investment, creating opportunities for manufacturers to deepen localisation, product capabilities and after-sales support.  Credits: DICV
