The Department of Science’s Technology Development Board has extended its support for the development and commercialisation of India’s first 240-volt electric motorcycle platform, the Ministry of Science and Technology said on Wednesday.

The platform—developed by Chennai-based Raptee Energy Private Limited—brings the benefits of high-voltage technology, already proven beneficial in the electric passenger vehicle segment, to electric two-wheelers. The 240-volt, DC electric platform will enable faster charging, improved efficiency while riding, and facilitate convenient compatibility with the existing public charging infrastructure.

“High-voltage technology in electric two-wheelers opens new possibilities for faster adoption of EVs intended for a huge market in India. By supporting this project, TDB seeks to accelerate domestic innovation, strengthen local R&D capacity, and ensure that sustainable mobility solutions are developed and manufactured within the country,” said Rajesh Kumar Pathak, secretary, Technology Development Board.

The Year Of EV Launches

September 2025

2025 is shaping up to be the year of electric car sales. In a first, India’s electric vehicles (EV) industry crossed the sales milestone of 100,000 units in FY25, fuelled by a slew of launches by major players, including Tata Motors, M&M, Ashok Leyland, JSW MG Motor, Hyundai, BMW, and Mercedes-Benz. The issue also looks at the challenges ahead for Tata Sons chairman N. Chandrasekaran in his third term, and India’s possible responses to U.S. president Donald Trump’s 50% tariff on Indian goods. To complement this high-voltage system, a specialised battery pack certified by the ARAI has also been developed under the ambit of this project. Raptee Energy’s in-house R&D unit, certified by DSIR, has more than six years of work dedicated to this field under its belt. The unit has also created capabilities to design, develop, test, and validate all major components—ranging from electronics and mechanical systems to embedded software—ensuring quality and indigenous value addition.

Raptee Energy’s prototype has also integrated smart connectivity features, including remote diagnostics and over-the-air updates. It emphasises sustainable manufacturing practices with zero waste and is free of any external emissions. The initiative also supports the government’s priorities, such as Aatmanirbhar Bharat, and contributes directly to Sustainable Development Goals, including SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities and SDG 13: Climate Action.

“TDB’s support validates our long-term R&D efforts and enables us to scale our high-voltage motorcycle platform. We see this as a significant step in creating indigenous, future-ready mobility solutions while contributing to India’s leadership in the global EV transition,” said Dinesh Arjun, CEO, Raptee Energy.

In October last year, Raptee Energy launched its first electric motorcycle compatible with CCS2 charging stations, which are otherwise only compatible with electric passenger vehicles. The motorcycle will also feature its proprietary operating system, which can provide customers with the potential for limitless upgrades. Electric motorcycle-makers, a niche category in the electric two-wheeler segment, traditionally rely on outsourced software for their products.
