JSW MG Motor India on Wednesday unveiled a new modular vehicle architecture that supports four electrified powertrain technologies, marking a strategic shift towards a multi-energy approach as automakers recalibrate their electrification plans in response to evolving consumer demand. The company said its new Advance Drive Architecture Platform Technology (ADAPT) will underpin future electric, hybrid, plug-in hybrid and range-extender electric vehicles, with one battery electric vehicle (BEV) and one plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) scheduled for launch by FY2026-27.

The move comes at a time when several global and domestic automakers are expanding beyond pure battery electric vehicles to include hybrid technologies, citing infrastructure constraints and varied consumer preferences. A common vehicle architecture also allows manufacturers to spread development costs across multiple models and respond more quickly to changes in market demand.

Platform to underpin future product pipeline

MG ADAPT has been developed as a modular platform capable of accommodating electric vehicles (EVs), hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs), plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) and range-extender electric vehicles (REEVs). According to the company, the architecture has been designed to improve product development efficiency while supporting advancements in driving range, charging capability, vehicle performance and safety.

Managing Director Anurag Mehrotra said the platform would form the technological base for the company's future new-energy vehicle portfolio in India, enabling it to offer multiple propulsion technologies depending on customer requirements.

Hybrid technologies in focus

The platform integrates a dedicated hybrid engine, battery system, a 10-in-1 electric drive unit and an electromagnetic hybrid transmission. These systems are managed through an intelligent energy management system that automatically switches between four operating modes—pure electric, series hybrid, parallel hybrid and engine direct drive—to optimise efficiency under different driving conditions.

MG ADAPT also supports range-extender electric vehicle (REEV) technology, where the wheels are powered exclusively by an electric motor while a petrol engine functions only as a generator to recharge the battery, extending driving range.

Part of broader electrification strategy

The platform is expected to underpin JSW MG Motor India's next generation of electrified models as the company expands its presence across multiple new-energy vehicle segments. The announcement reflects a broader industry trend of adopting flexible vehicle architectures capable of supporting different powertrain technologies instead of relying exclusively on battery electric vehicles.
