Toyota Fortuner, Legender get mild-hybrid Neo Drive 48V boost

Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM) on Monday said that it has launched new Neo Drive 48V variants of its popular Fortuner and Legender SUVs, priced at ₹44.72 lakh and ₹50.09 lakh (ex-showroom) respectively. This marks a significant step toward cleaner, more refined performance in India’s premium SUV segment with a segment-first mild-hybrid technology aimed at better fuel economy and lower emissions—without compromising on power or off-road prowess.

The new Neo Drive 48V system is a mild-hybrid, intelligent electric assist mechanism paired with Toyota’s 2.8-litre, 4-cylinder turbo-diesel engine. It includes a belt-integrated starter generator and lithium-ion battery that support the engine during acceleration, aid in smoother take-offs, and enable a new Smart Idle Start-Stop function to reduce fuel usage in city traffic. Additionally, regenerative braking recharges the battery while providing better braking performance.

“With the SUV market evolving rapidly, customers are increasingly looking for differentiated styling and advanced features. The Neo Drive 48V system is a practical and future-ready solution aligned with our carbon neutrality goals,” said Varinder Wadhwa, VP, sales, service and used cars, TKM.

The Neo Drive Boost Assist system is designed to improve low-end torque, especially useful in urban traffic or off-road scenarios. Despite its electric assist, the vehicle’s rugged DNA remains intact—payload capacity, off-road dynamics, and durability are preserved.

Toyota has also included a Multi-Terrain Select system that adapts traction and throttle response to suit varying off-road conditions, and the 360-degree camera simplifies manoeuvring through tight city corners or challenging trails.

The Fortuner is among the most successful cars in the premium SUV segment, with Toyota recently announcing that it has cumulatively sold three lakh units of the Fortuner brand since its debut in 2009. The Fortuner currently has a dominant 84.5% market share in the full-size segment, with it selling 29,393 units in FY25, according to industry estimates.

“The Fortuner and Legender remain a top choice among SUV enthusiasts who seek a perfect blend of luxury, performance, and reliability. Whether navigating city streets or tackling challenging terrains, it offers a premium feel paired with robust strength. It is built on the foundation of Toyota’s QDR (Quality, Durability, and Reliability) philosophy,” said Wadhwa.
