Uttar Pradesh (UP) emerged as India’s largest automotive market in the first quarter of FY2026-27, clocking sales of 4.48 lakh passenger vehicles and 8.82 lakh two-wheelers, according to regional sales data released by the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM). The numbers put the state at the top of both segments during the April-June quarter.
Uttar Pradesh’s passenger vehicle sales accounted for a substantial share of the 12.74 lakh units sold nationally in Q1 FY27. Maharashtra was a distant second with 1.47 lakh units, highlighting the wide gap between the country’s largest passenger vehicle markets.
The state’s strong showing comes against the backdrop of rising vehicle ownership, expanding road infrastructure and growing mobility requirements. Its large consumer base and increasing urbanisation have also made Uttar Pradesh an increasingly important market for automakers across price segments.
UP dominates two-wheeler demand
The state’s lead was even more pronounced in the two-wheeler segment. Uttar Pradesh recorded 8.82 lakh two-wheeler sales in Q1 FY27, the highest among all states, according to SIAM. Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Bihar followed the state in the rankings.
The Western Zone, which includes Maharashtra and other major markets, registered 16.61 lakh two-wheeler sales, the highest among India’s geographical zones. Uttar Pradesh’s individual tally, however, underscores the scale of demand emerging from the state.
SIAM said, “Uttar Pradesh recorded highest Two Wheeler Sales with 8.82 lakh units in the country in Q1-(FY-2026-27), followed by Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka & Bihar.”
Electric mobility adds another growth layer
The regional sales data also points to increasing adoption of electric mobility, with e-rickshaws and e-carts contributing to vehicle demand. The trend is particularly significant for a state where affordable and shared mobility plays an important role in meeting transportation needs.
SIAM Director General Rajesh Menon said, “Uttar Pradesh’s outstanding sales performance in both segments clearly demonstrates its status as the automotive demand leader. This trend is set to continue with ongoing infrastructure development and consumer preferences shifting toward electric and affordable mobility solutions.”
