The government has assigned the additional charge of Secretary for the Department of Revenue to Ajay Seth, who's currently serving as the Secretary of the Department of Economic Affairs (DEA), following Tuhin Kanta Pandey's appointment as the new SEBI chief.
"The Competent Authority has approved the assignment of additional charge of the post of Secretary, Department of Revenue to Shri Ajay Seth, IAS (KN:1987), Secretary, Department of Economic Affairs upon relinquishment of the charge of the post by Shri Tuhin Kanta Pandey, IAS (OR:1987), till the appointment of a regular incumbent or until further orders, whichever is earlier," said the government order.
Seth is an Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer of the 1987 Karnataka cadre. Notably, Pandey has been appointed as the next chairman of Securities and Exchange Board of India for a period of three years. Pandey will join the office on March 3, 2025.
He will succeed Madhabi Puri Buch, who has been the Sebi chairperson since 2022. In appointing Pandey, the government has gone back to appointing an IAS officer to the post. Buch, a former ICICI Bank official, was the first person from the private sector to hold the post.
