Nand Kishore Goenka, the patriarch of the Goenka family, noted social worker and father of Essel Group founder and Chairman Subhash Chandra, passed away on Monday at the age of 96.
Widely respected for his lifelong commitment to community welfare and philanthropy, Goenka was regarded as a guiding force within the family, whose values of simplicity, public service and compassion left a lasting impact across generations.

Goenka was known for his work in community welfare and social service, it said. The Essel Group described him as a person whose life was marked by humility and compassion.
In a post on X, Chandra said, "Today morning, our beloved father Nand Kishore Goenka, breathed his last. Though all in family are saddened. My desire is to celebrate his 96 years' life, which was full of samaj seva, cow seva, and national service as RSS swayamsevak."
Goenka was widely regarded as a guiding influence behind the Essel Group family and was known for leading a life rooted in simplicity, philanthropy and community service. While he largely stayed away from the corporate spotlight, he remained closely associated with charitable and social welfare initiatives over the decades. The Essel Group said his legacy of compassion, service and commitment to societal welfare would continue to inspire future generations.

His son, Subhash Chandra, founded the Essel Group and went on to establish Zee Entertainment, a pioneering private satellite television network that reshaped India's broadcasting industry, alongside building businesses across infrastructure, packaging and technology,education and entertainment.
The Essel Group said Goenka's life and values would continue to inspire future generations and expressed condolences to the bereaved family.
