India’s dairy sector is moving towards a unified digital system with issuance of over 35 crore Pashu Aadhar for livestock by the National Dairy Development Board (NDDB) in coordination with the Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying (DAHD), according to a release issued by the government today.

At the centre of this effort is the National Digital Livestock Mission (NDLM), which supports the creation of a national digital livestock ecosystem known as Bharat Pashudhan.

“More than 35.68 crore animals have been issued “Pashu Aadhaar” under the National Digital Livestock Mission (NDLM), enabling traceable livestock management” stated the official release.

Pashu Aadhaar is a 12-digit bar-coded ear tag that tracks the livestock animals are issued. This unique identification number links each animal to its health and productivity records and serves as the reference point for all services.

According to the release, the platform records field-level activities such as breeding, artificial insemination, vaccination, treatment, and health services. More than 84 crore transactions have been recorded so far. Veterinarians and extension workers help farmers access and use the system. NDDB provides technical and financial support to states for implementation.

Under the new system, the farmers can access advisory services and scheme-related information through the 1962 mobile application and the toll-free number 1962. Veterinary services are provided through Mobile Veterinary Units at the farmer’s location.

Digital platforms for milk procurement and processing

For milk procurement, NDDB has developed the Automatic Milk Collection System (AMCS) for Dairy Cooperative Societies. The system digitally records milk quantity, quality, and fat content and enables direct payment to farmers’ bank accounts. Farmers receive transaction details through SMS.

“Over 17.3 lakh milk producers across 54 milk unions benefit from the Automatic Milk Collection System (AMCS), ensuring transparent payments and efficient operations,” release said.

According to the official release, AMCS is operational in 12 states and Union Territories, covering over 26,000 dairy societies and benefiting more than 17.3 lakh milk producers across 54 milk unions as of October 22, 2025.

The system includes applications for dairy societies, centralised portals at union and national levels, and mobile applications for farmers, supervisors, and secretaries. Over 2.43 lakh farmers and more than 15,000 cooperative staff have registered on the AMCS mobile platform.

NDDB has also developed a web-based Dairy Enterprise Resource Planning system known as NDERP. The system covers finance, inventory, procurement, sales, manufacturing, and human resources. It is integrated with AMCS to link milk collection, processing, and distribution.

Systems for breeding, data sharing, and logistics

In the area of artificial insemination, NDDB operates the Semen Station Management System (SSMS), which manages semen production, quality control, bull lifecycle, and distribution. The system is linked to national databases for traceability. Currently, 38 semen stations across India are using SSMS.

Animal productivity and health data are captured through the Information Network for Animal Productivity and Health (INAPH), which records breeding, nutrition, and health services delivered at the farm level.

For sector-wide data management, NDDB runs the Internet-based Dairy Information System (i-DIS).

“Around 198 milk unions and 15 federations use the Internet-based Dairy Information System (i-DIS) for data-driven decision-making and performance benchmarking,” the release mentioned.

The platform is used by milk unions, federations, cattle feed plants, and marketing dairies to track procurement, sales, production, and input supply. Around 198 milk unions and several allied units are currently part of the system.

NDDB has also introduced GIS-based milk route optimisation to improve milk transportation planning. The system maps procurement and distribution routes digitally to reduce distance, time, and fuel use. A web-based route planning tool has been made available to dairy cooperatives at no cost.
