MG Motor India, a subsidiary of Shanghai-based Chinese automotive manufacturer SAIC Motor, today launched its smart electric vehicle, the MG Comet EV, which is also the smallest car in India currently. The GSEV-platform-based ultra-compact electric hatchback PureEV claims to have a minimalist yet spacious design. Bookings for the EV will open on May 15, while customers will be able to take test drives from April 27.

The Comet EV is the second EV in MG Motor India’s portfolio, and will be available at starting price of ₹7,98000/- (ex-showroom). "The Comet EV is more than just a car; it represents our determination to change the way we commute in our cities,” says Rajeev Chaba, president & managing director, MG Motor India.

Chaba said the Comet EV, which is built on the pure electric GSEV platform, is the fastest to hit the 1 million EV sales mark globally. "The future of mobility is electric and connected. With the Comet EV, we aim to empower our customers to make a smart choice without compromising on style or convenience,” he added.

Design-wise, the MG Comet EV has been built on the concept of BICO—'Big Inside, Compact Outside’. The Comet EV offers spacious, enhanced legroom and headroom.

The MG Comet EV features a cabin with a four-seater configuration with 50:50 settings on the second row of seats. Its steering comes combined with futuristic pod-like controls.

In addition, the centre console is equipped with features such as electric window operation buttons and a 12-Volt charging port.

In the dashboard, MG Comet EV features 55+ connected car features and 100+ voice commands, and includes floating twin display widescreen, with a 10.25” head unit and a 10.25” digital cluster. The MG Comet EV also features a smart key, adding to its tech wibe.

The Comet EV has a range of around 230 km, a certified battery range, on a single charge. The Comet EV is touted to be a segment creator, and is targeted at urban commuters and EV enthusiasts in India. The Comet EV can provide a charging cost of ₹519 per 1,000 km, claims MG.

The EV comes powered with a 17.3 kWh Li-ion battery, with prismatic cells that assure longer cycle life. In terms of safety, the EV has dual front airbags, ABS +EBD, front & rear 3 pt. Seat belts, rear parking camera & sensor, TPMS (indirect) and ISOFIX child seat.

In addition, MG has also introduced two special editions of the Comet EV- the Gamer edition and the LIT edition. It also comes with several personalisation options, including 250+ decal options, graphics etc.

Besides, MG Motor India had unveiled two more vehicles, the MG4—an electric hatchback—and the MG EHS, a plug-in hybrid SUV, in January 2023. The company is also evaluating them for the Indian market. The MG4 EV hatchback is laden with spacious interiors and ensures driving convenience through its five different charging options—including the 12V portable charger, and both AC and DC charging options.

The MG EHS Plug-in Hybrid has an electric motor, a battery pack and a powerful petrol engine that work seamlessly together for optimum efficiency, power and range. The hybrid delivers a combined power output of 258ps which helps it achieve a speed of 100km/h in 6.9 seconds.
