He has taken Vadilal international and has played a pivotal role in making Vadilal Industries an umbrella brand for ice creams and frozen foods. I failed in class 9 and wanted to move out from St Xavier’s High School Loyola Hall, Ahmedabad, and join class 10 in a new school. My father was against me changing schools. He said that there was no need to move out, and that I would have to repeat a year in class 9.

I was ashamed to repeat the same class with a new set of boys who were junior, but my father did not relent. He was clear in his view: I didn’t study, so I failed. It was a matter of fact for him, not something to be embarrassed about. My father had taught me a good lesson: Never settle for the sub-standard.
