Shares of Maruti Suzuki India declined more than 4% on Tuesday, emerging as the top loser on the Sensex, after the country’s largest passenger carmaker reported a 10% month-on-month decline in total sales in August.

Maruti Suzuki reported total sales of 219,220 units in August 2026, down from 241,421 units in July. On a year-on-year basis, however, sales rose 21% from 180,683 units in August 2025.

Following the monthly sales update, Maruti Suzuki shares fell as much as 4.6% to an intraday low of ₹12,856 on the BSE. At the time of reporting, the stock was trading 3.93% lower at ₹12,950, giving the company a market capitalisation of around ₹4.06 lakh crore.

The auto heavyweight has remained under pressure in 2026. It touched a 52-week high of ₹17,371.60 on January 5, while its 52-week low stands at ₹12,202.10, hit on March 30. The stock has declined more than 22% so far this calendar year and nearly 9% over the past month. Over the last year, it has delivered a negative return of more than 13%.

In an exchange filing on Tuesday morning, Maruti Suzuki said total August sales comprised domestic sales of 180,078 units, sales to other original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) of 5,298 units and exports of 33,844 units.

Domestic passenger vehicle sales up 35% YoY

The data showed that domestic passenger vehicle sales stood at 176,971 units in August, compared with 131,278 units a year earlier. Utility vehicle sales increased to 79,045 units from 54,043 units in August 2025, while passenger car sales rose to 85,965 units from 66,450 units.

Within passenger cars, sales of mini models, including Alto and S-Presso, increased to 8,799 units from 6,853 units a year earlier. Sales of compact and mid-size models, which include Baleno, Celerio, Ciaz, Dzire, Ignis, Swift and WagonR, rose to 77,166 units from 59,597 units.

Van sales of Eeco stood at 11,961 units, compared with 10,785 units in August last year. Light commercial vehicle sales, comprising the Super Carry, rose to 3,107 units from 2,772 units.

Exports, however, declined to 33,844 units in August from 36,538 units a year earlier, while sales to other OEMs fell to 5,298 units from 10,095 units.

Crosses 1-million-unit sales mark in first five months of FY27

Despite the sequential decline in August, Maruti Suzuki said it surpassed the milestone of one million units in total sales within the first five months of FY27.

For April-August 2026, total sales stood at 1.14 million units, up from 889,070 units in the corresponding period of FY26. Domestic sales, including sales to other OEMs, rose to 954,729 units from 723,815 units, while exports increased to 188,636 units from 165,255 units.
