Domestic travel across India is witnessing sustained growth as more consumers travel frequently for work, leisure, and family commitments. With inter-city movement rising and travellers increasingly looking for affordable protection against disruptions and emergencies, insurers are beginning to expand their focus beyond international travel covers.

Against this backdrop, Policybazaar has launched an annual travel insurance plan for domestic trips. The offering is designed for frequent travellers and provides year-round coverage across multiple travel modes, including flights, trains, buses, and road travel, under a single policy.

A single policy for year-round domestic travel

Unlike conventional single-trip travel insurance products, the annual domestic travel cover is designed to protect travellers across multiple journeys undertaken throughout the year. The policy covers various modes of transport, including flights, trains, buses, and road travel, making it suitable for regular commuters, business travellers and families who travel frequently.

The company says the offering is intended to provide greater convenience and affordability for consumers who would otherwise need to purchase separate insurance plans for every domestic trip.

What the insurance plan covers

The annual travel insurance plan offers protection against a range of travel-related disruptions and emergencies. This includes personal accident coverage of up to ₹3 lakh and hospitalisation coverage of up to ₹1 lakh during travel. The policy also provides compensation for loss of checked-in baggage and support for trip cancellations arising from unexpected changes in travel plans.

What sets the product apart is its broader protection framework. In addition to covering travel-related issues such as delays and cancellations, the plan also extends protection to medical emergencies during travel and select home-related risks, including burglary while the policyholder is away.

Annual premium for policy

The annual premium for the policy starts at around ₹1,500 per member, positioning it as a relatively affordable option for consumers who undertake multiple domestic journeys every year. The plan is targeted at frequent domestic flyers, business travellers, families taking regular vacations, inter-city commuters and travellers opting for frequent short getaways.

Commenting on the launch, Manas Kapoor said travel risks in India are often associated more with international travel, even though domestic travel has become significantly more frequent across work, leisure and family segments.

“With annual domestic travel insurance now available on Policybazaar, we are looking to make protection more accessible and relevant for travellers closer to home through a simple and affordable solution,” Kapoor said.
