If cricket is a religion in India and cricketers are gods, then Gupta is the high priest. Gupta runs the sports port - folio for Star and Disney India across its broadcast and streaming platforms, which includes its crown jewel—the Indian Premier League (IPL). An 11-year veteran at Star, Gupta’s efforts in the regionalisation and customisation of sports broadcast have reshaped the paradigm for sports production and broadcasting in India. Star’s regionalisation strategy has helped its marquee properties like IPL and oth - er official cricket tournaments, the Pro Kabaddi League, the Indian Super League, etc. gain a stronghold in the Indian market. As a result, Indian language feeds contribute nearly 90% of the viewership for these tournaments. The IPL, of course, is in a league of its own, with the 2020 edition notching up a record 400.5 billion minutes of viewership for Disney+ Hotstar, which in turn accounted for nearly 30% of U.S.-based Disney’s 86.8 million subscribers. Besides his corporate duties, Gupta, who was a journalist for eight years before switching hats, is also the chairperson of the sports committee at the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce & Industry (FICCI).
