Tata Group targets 2 million vehicles in 5 years; to produce hydrogen buses from Lucknow plant

The Tata Group has set a long-term expansion roadmap for its commercial vehicle business, targeting production of 2 million vehicles over the next five years, while also preparing to introduce hydrogen-powered buses and trucks from its Lucknow manufacturing facility.

The announcement coincided with a major milestone at the plant, where Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath flagged off the one millionth vehicle that rolled out from the Lucknow facility of Tata Motors. The event marked a key moment in the plant’s 34-year journey since operations began in 1992.

Lucknow plant at the centre of multi-powertrain shift

Speaking at the event, Tata Sons Chairman N. Chandrasekaran said the company expects the next phase of growth to accelerate sharply. “I am very sure that the 20 lakhth (2 millionth) vehicle milestone will be achieved within the next five years, given the growth trajectory,” he noted.

He highlighted how the company’s product portfolio has evolved significantly over time. “While our portfolio was limited earlier, it has now expanded across multiple powertrains, including diesel, CNG, and electric. In the future, hydrogen-powered buses and trucks will also be produced here,” Chandrasekaran said.

The Lucknow facility, which has served as a key commercial vehicle hub for over three decades, is now expected to play a central role in Tata’s transition toward a multi-energy mobility platform.

Stronger industrial link with Uttar Pradesh

Chandrasekaran underlined the deepening relationship between Tata Group and Uttar Pradesh, describing the plant as a symbol of long-standing trust and partnership. “It is a matter of immense pleasure to witness the rollout of the 10 lakhth vehicle. This milestone reflects the enduring partnership between Tata Group and Uttar Pradesh,” he said.

He also pointed to the group’s expanding presence in the state across sectors such as software, power, hospitality, retail, and defence. Tata Consultancy Services currently employs around 20,000 professionals in Lucknow, Noida, and Varanasi, with plans to double the workforce to 40,000 over the next five years.

Aligning with India’s long-term growth vision

Chandrasekaran linked the expansion to India’s broader development trajectory, citing the Viksit Bharat 2047 vision and Uttar Pradesh’s ambition of becoming a $6-trillion economy. He said India’s growth prospects remain strong, supported by sustained industrial expansion and infrastructure development.

He also announced new social and technology initiatives, including an AI technology centre of excellence in Gorakhpur, aimed at supporting industrial transformation and skill development in the region, alongside water body restoration and other community programmes.
