India jumps 40 spots to 71st ranking in mobile speed test category in Nov

India jumped 40 spots to 71st ranking in November from 113th ranking in October for the median mobile speed test category, according to Speedtest Global Index by network intelligence and connectivity insights company Ookla. During the month, the country’s mean mobile download speed stood at 50.26 Megabits per second (Mbps) which was twice that of 27.13 Mbps in October. 

In the median mobile speeds category, the country jumped eight spots to 105th position in November against 113th ranking in October. The country’s median mobile download speed during the month stood at 18.26 Mbps against 16.50 Mbps in October. This is an improvement of 1.75 Mbps. 

In the mean fixed broadband speed test category, the country jumped two spots to 81st position in November against 83rd position in October. The country’s median broadband speed stood at 77.73 Mbps during the month, as against 75.94 Mbps in October. But despite showing an improvement from 48.78 Mbps in October to 49.09 Mbps in November, the country slipped two spots in the median fixed broadband speed test category to 80th position in November, as against 79th position in October. 

Qatar led the median mobile speed test category with 176.18 Mbps mobile download speeds, whereas the United Arab Emirates (UAE) led the mean mobile speed category having a speed of 323.10 Mbps. For the median broadband category, Chile topped the charts with 216 Mbps broadband download speeds, whereas in the mean broadband category, Monaco led the category by having 320.08 Mbps of download speed. 

The Speedtest Global Test index is a monthly internet speed test ranking for countries and cities. Ookla's Speedtest Global Index compares speed test data from around the world each month. Data for the Global Index comes from the hundreds of millions of tests taken by real people using speed tests every month to test their Internet performance, the company said.

Amongst cities, Ar-Rayyan, a city in Qatar topped the mobile speed test category by having 197.39 Mbps of download speed, whereas Beijing topped the broadband speed test category by having 256.03 Mbps of download speed.

In October, Ookla said the country’s 5G download speeds reached 500 Mbps on test networks with Reliance Jio Infocomm clocking almost 600 Mbps median download speed on its 5G network in Delhi. In the national capital, Airtel reached nearly 200 Mbps median download speed at 197.98 Mbps while Jio recorded 598.58 Mbps since June 2022.

Ookla had said earlier that 89% of Indian smartphone users are ready to upgrade to 5G. Among Speedtest users, Jio saw the largest increase in 5G-capable devices (67.4%), followed by Airtel (61.6%), and Vi India (56%).
