Counting of votes for Assembly elections across key states continued on Monday, with trends indicating significant leads for major political parties in West Bengal, Assam, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and the Union Territory of Puducherry.
In West Bengal, trends at 7.30 pm from the Election Commission of India (ECI) showed the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leading in 206 seats while Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee-led All India Trinamool Congress (TMC) was ahead in 81. Counting is underway for 293 of the 294 constituencies across 77 centres in 23 districts, with 2,926 candidates in the fray.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday hailed the BJP’s surge in Bengal, saying “the Lotus blooms in West Bengal” as the party edged closer to forming its first government in the state.
In Assam, counting for the 126-member Assembly began at 8 am. Trends showed the BJP-led alliance nearing the 100-seat mark, with the BJP ahead in 78 seats and the Indian National Congress leading in 24, according to ECI data.
The results will determine whether the ruling alliance secures a third straight term or if the Congress-led opposition stages a comeback. The state recorded an 85.91% voter turnout during polling on April 9.
In Kerala, counting trends by evening indicated a clear lead for the United Democratic Front (UDF), which crossed the majority mark. The Indian National Congress emerged as the single largest party, winning 53 seats and leading in 10 more. The contest in the state is between the incumbent Communist Party of India (Marxist)-led Left Democratic Front (LDF) and the Congress-led UDF.
In Tamil Nadu, actor-turned-politician Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) made a strong debut, winning 41 seats as per trends available at 7 pm.
The ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) secured 20 seats, while its ally Congress won one. The All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) had won 17 seats.
Counting is underway for all 234 constituencies, with the DMK-Congress alliance aiming to retain power and the AIADMK-BJP alliance seeking to regain control.
In Puducherry, the ruling All India N. R. Congress (AINRC) had won nine seats as of 4 pm. The BJP won the Mannadipet and Neravy-T.R. Pattinam constituencies, while the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) secured Nellithope.
Chief Minister N. Rangasamy registered a comfortable victory from Thattanchavady. The contest in the UT is between the NDA alliance — comprising AINRC, BJP, AIADMK, and others — and the INDIA bloc led by Congress and DMK.
More updates are awaited as counting continues across states.
