Being the First Lady of the world of vaccines, Natasha Poonawalla is always on the move. Married to world’s largest vaccine maker, Serum Institute of India CEO Adar Poonawalla, she makes it a point to balance her busy work schedule and her recreational life with elan. Poonawalla is globally recognised not only as a successful businesswoman, but also as an icon of style and substance. 

When it comes to the work front, Poonawalla, Executive Director of the company, is very environment conscious and takes the lead in employing several practices so as not to cause damages to the surroundings. “In the past year, I've spearheaded initiatives focused on sustainable practices within our business operations, including a significant reduction in our carbon footprint through innovative supply chain strategies,” she says. “Additionally, we launched a mentorship programme aimed at empowering women in the workforce, providing them with the tools and support necessary to thrive in leadership roles.” Gender equality is something that Poonawalla gives particular emphasis to at workplaces. “I firmly believe that gender equality is not just a moral imperative but a catalyst for innovation and growth. Women possess unique perspectives and capabilities that are essential for effective leadership,” she adds. “When women lead, businesses perform better. It’s crucial to create environments where women can thrive and be recognised for their contributions not only within the company but for the economic growth of the nation at large.”

Poonawalla says in order to build diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) into Serum Institute’s company culture without compromising meritocracy, it’s essential to establish clear metrics and goals that are aligned with their business objectives. “We prioritise transparent hiring processes and create pathways for diverse talent to succeed, ensuring that all employees are evaluated on their skills and contributions while fostering an inclusive environment,” she says. Poonawalla also believes that in challenging times, encouraging team effort and creating a sense of belonging among colleagues are very important when it comes to surpassing the tricky times. “In times of volatility and uncertainty, I foster a culture of resilience and adaptability within my team. I encourage open communication, collaboration, and continuous learning,: she says. Poonawalla believes that by empowering team members to embrace change and think creatively, challenges can be navigated more effectively. Additionally, she also emphasises the importance of mental well-being, ensuring everyone feels supported during turbulent times.

Along with these measures, it is also equally important to be technologically ready to advance the business at all times. For this, Poonawalla says they are actively integrating advanced technologies and AI into their operations to enhance efficiency and decision-making. “Our approach involves continuous training and upskilling for our employees to ensure they are equipped to leverage these tools. By embracing innovation, we can stay ahead of the curve and remain competitive in a rapidly evolving marketplace,” she adds.

Looking at the years ahead, Poonawalla aims to continue the initiatives undertaken by her and further strengthening the same. “In the upcoming year, I aim to further enhance our sustainability initiatives and expand our mentorship programs for young women. Personally, I’m committed to fostering a more inclusive workplace culture and exploring new avenues for innovation in our business,” she says. “I also plan to invest more time in community outreach, focusing on empowering underprivileged women and children through education, skill based vocational training and entrepreneurship.”

What would be her advice to the youngsters of today who look up to her? “To my younger self, I would say to embrace every opportunity for growth, even if it feels uncomfortable. Take calculated risks and don’t shy away from leadership roles. My advice would be to cultivate a strong network of mentors and peers, as they will be invaluable in ones journey. Remember that confidence is built through experience, so trust in your capabilities and move forward accordingly.”
